Bainimarama abuses Winston for political gain

Fiji continues to recover post Cyclone Winston with donations pouring internationally as well as within Fiji.

Not only have Fiji's neighbours like New Zealand and Australia provided major assistance in the rebuild but ordinary former Fiji nationals living overseas have taken it upon themselves to raise money or collect clothes etc for the victims of the cyclone.

This cyclone has reminded us that Fijians/Indo Fijians may appear divided politically, but are united at heart, especially when it comes helping each other during difficult times. And this generous spirit of us Fijians/Indo Fijians, can never be taken away, even by corrupt politicians.

It's interesting to see what is happening politically too during a disaster. There are some genuine parties like the three NFP MPs who have contributed $35,000 towards relief and rehabilitation of Fiji. SODELPA on the other hand has called for all parliamentarians to contribute 10% of their salaries.

In contrast, no word on sacrificing their salaries from two of Fiji's highest paid people, Frank Bainimarama and Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum. Instead Bainimarama has set up a 'PM's disaster relief fund' for people to contribute to.

Interesting too is all the praises for Bainimarama during this recovery. Photos of him hugging children, and women crying have been popular with comments like 'he is the best PM in the world', 'there has never been a PM like him', 'he is so down to earth unlike other PMs' and so on.

Cyclone Winston was devastating for Fiji but a golden egg for PR company Qorvis to promote Frank Bainimarama as a messiah.

This is similar to what happened in New Orleans. A disaster becomes the best promotion for any Prime Minister. In Australia, former PM Tony Abbott received praise and accolades for how he dealt with the terrorism threats; in the US Barrack Obama's response to drive by shootings and a call for guns to be banned. There are many more examples.

It is important to not confuse genuine behaviour with political mileage.

While Fiji recovers and the focus is on helping the victims of the cyclone, Bainimarama has also chosen to appoint three of his military men to top positions.

  • Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto as the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces;

  • Brigadier General Sitiveni Tukaituraga Qiliho as the Commissioner of Police

  • Commander Francis Bulewa Kean as the Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service.

Now why would he make such important appointments at a time when the country is still crippled? Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa has labelled it 'jobs for the boys' and we agree.

All of them are abusers of human rights. Francis Kean, Bainimarama's brother in law is a murderer who never did his time.

So before you go praising Frank Bainimarama and his merry men for the efforts in the recovery of Fiji, think carefully about what is really going on and how Fiji is faring in the world today.

Editor,
Panama Papers Leak
Now the British public too is out on the street demanding British PM David Cameron resign because of his murky offshore financial dealings
( Aljazeera news 10/04). He tried to smooth talk his way out by claiming he should have and could have done things better blah blah blah but I doubt very much the British public will buy into his belated pleadings only after he has been exposed in the Panama leak.
The rich and the powerful, in every country, have been taking the ordinary folks on a ride with their financial wheeling and dealing and making out that their affluence and privileged position was reward for their business enterprise and acumen and smart investment.
The public have had enough of the lies and deceit and fraudulent activities of the powerful elites.
The public reaction is understandable.
I am looking forward to the demise of more of these parasitic elites named in the Panama Papers.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

3.25AM...you reckon name calling shows lack of intelligence and anti social behaviour. Yet you say ....."You’re typical Daily Mail reader, highly sensitive and emotional beating ones chest and nostrils huffing and puffing. The only way they can get their way is through display of childish tantrums and aggressive behaviour." And earlier , you reckon DM readers are simpletons. So what does your name calling make you? Hypocritical much? Perhaps a tad moronic? hahahahahahahaha.

Its ok, no need to reply, I got better things to do...like read the Daily Mail.I do enjoy DM as according to you .... "DM journalism is based on a will of manipulating, scare mongering, deceiving and lying to its audiences. This is a paper that is anti human rights, anti intellectualism, anti liberalism, anti working class, promotes fascism and totalitarianism and gossipy journalism for wing nuts who cannot think for themselves and digest serious news."
Wow I can't wait. Wing nut, huh? Hmmm. More name calling? Intelligent stuff man. Impressive.

@8:47PM
How predictable another typical response coming from a DM reader with their provocative questions. It hasn’t quite registered at home has it; the topic at hand is about criminal justice system and Australian law. Hey fair play I too have better things to do then to communicate with a wing nut whose head is stuck so far up where the sun don't shine.
At the end of the day we have nothing intellectually or politically in common. We will go back and forth and simply get nowhere. You have your opinions and I have mine whether you like it or not that’s the way it’s going to be and how the world works.
In the mean time I'll get back to better things like looking at our country’s laws and the criminal justice system. Holding government accountable in providing the nation with security and to maintain law and order since there has been an ever increase in rapes, thefts, robberies and assaults.

“Its ok, no need to reply, I got better things to do...like read the Daily Mail”

Yes you go enjoy yourself with reading the DM because that’s where you belong, not here discussing complex issues, cheerio now.

Hey Thug..do you have anything useful to talk about? We are fed up of the one and same shit you're feeding c45.
Administrator do you have any control over the 'shits' this single asshole is spreading on c45? Come on take care and be responsible. We love c45 but you need to start watching and keep a tag on scavengers like this thing. He/She/It obviously is not the real Renee but a thing.

@1.41AM..typical elitist pseudo intellectual bullshit. You reckon I read DM so must be of lower intellect than you? Hahahaha. You accuse DM of fascism, discrimination, anti this, anti that yet you display a holier than thou attitude yourself. You judge DM readers as being plebs, etc yet say you stand for equality, justice and all the bullshit pseudo intellectuals "seem" to stand for.So which is it? I reiterate , you are a hypocrite. Reality check. you are too full of yourself. Re-phrase ...you are full of shit. If you are going to be an arsehole, at least be consistent

Editor,
Political Corruption South African Style.
In read in Ranjeni Munusamy's article Guptas Gone : 'We must crush the head of the snake' - EFF in the Daily Maverick ( April 11 ) that " Two months ago, the Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema, focused his radar on the Gupta empire and demanded that the family leave South Africa. Over a week ago, he made the extraordinary allegation that President Jacob Zuma had carried R6-billion out of SA to Dubai on behalf of the Guptas. On Sunday it was reported that the Guptas fled the country to resettle in Dubai after announcing last week that they had resigned all their directorships in their SA companies. While the EFF is claiming victory, they still have one more target in their ' Zupta Must Fall' campaign "
"... Now we want the head of the snake. In order to complete the Zupta Must Fall project, we must crush the head of the snake" EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi told Daily Maverick ." Only once we do that will there be an end to the era of nepotism and kleptocracy we have in the country".
The Guptas, it appears, made a lot of financial capital in South Africa through patronage politics. But apparently not enough social capital. And, that has been their undoing.
I am sure there is a lesson in there for others similarly inclined - doing business the dirty way.

@9.51am You’re full of shit yourself, pseudo intellectual hahahahahahaha you couldn't even spell "because”. Yes reality check is certainly what you need; you can't even take what you dish out and respond with provocative garbage filled with childish tantrums and an emotional wreck. You call others dickheads and arseholes yet in fact you’re a spitting image of one. You divert the subject at hand and twist facts to suit your selfish views. You accuse others of trying to be a smart arse on this blog like Rajend, when in fact it is you who are trying to draw attention to oneself of being the centre of the universe and therefore everyone should shut up and submit themselves to you because you believe you hold all the right views and everyone is wrong. You accuse others of being a classic moron when again the fact is you are one yourself but it gets even funnier because you are unaware of it.
“ Nothing sincere about you or your kind.” Yes you said it, that is what you said to Rajend hahahahahahhahahahaha a racist is what you are and now you don’t need to hide behind that bullshit of “Hello I’m the only smart blogger on C45”.....Have a good day now DM racist simpleton pleb. I certainly don’t need to be consistent and communicate with a mindless “RACIST” that’s the reality check right there. CHEERIO!! NOW!

Editor,
THAT alliance.
Fiji folks who keep a watch on Fiji politics via C4.5 and other social media would be familiar with the alliance Deborah Morrison refers to in her letter to the Age 12/04. She writes " Mike Reece mentions a slew of dubious practices, including " shonky developers" and the " manipulation of councils" ( letters 9/4). The alliance between those in public office ( councils) and those who seek to use them for personal gains ( developers) appears to flourish " in an environment where there is no real public scrutiny, transparency and accountability.
Does anyone require examples to remind them of THAT alliance in the Fiji context?
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Corrupt Leader
We learn from Aljazeera news this morning 12/04 that Kyrgyzstan PM Temir Sarieve resigns over corruption. A parliamentary commission said last week the government had broken the law, accusing it of having rigged a $100 million road construction tender to ensure it was given to a Chinese firm that lacked the required licence... ( Atleast here a parliamentary commission was empowered to investigate the corrupt deal).
The PM's resignation has triggered an automatic resignation of his cabinet ( ' Kyrgyztan PM Temir Sarieve resigns after cabinet accused of graft' Reuter's 11/04).
Temir Sarieve is not the first PM to be bought off by big business - whatever it's background, Chinese, American, Indian etc - nor is he the last.
Corrupt leaders will always fall under the influence of corrupt corporations. They have a natural affinity.

Dishonest JPs
Referring to corrupt JPs in Labasa, Sachida Rao says in his letter to the Fiji Times (12/04) that there are " so many honest people around who deserve this honourable position" instead of the crooked, dishonest ones.
That's true.
But you see some get appointed as JPs not because of their integrity but because they suck up to the politicians in power.
They are appointed because they are politically onside. And, it's not only the JPs who get appointed that way...

Corrupt Corporate wallahs
In his letter to the Canberra Times 11/04 Gary J Wilson writes "... Contrary to the standard political justification for preserving the status quo, "That will not drive corporations overseas. We need rather more directors and executives behind bars". It's a big ask that's up to the coppers and the prosecutors and yes, the judges and the juries too. Don't hang the whistleblowers and the hacks and the journos to dry".
The prosecutors in Brazil have set a good example by round up the corrupt corporate wallahs .
Others should do the same if they are serious about getting rid of the stench of corruption.

Editor,
Role of the Attorney General.
My understanding is that as the " First Law Officer" the role of the Attorney General is to act as the guardian of the public interest/the public good. Now when we hear the Attorney General in Brazil Jose Eduardo Cardoso is trying to block the impeachment proceedings against President Dilma Rousseff it makes you wonder in whose interest he is working? He is a known staunch ally of the president whose government is engulfed in the state controlled oil company Petrobras corruption scandal involving high profile government officials.( Aljazeera news 15/04).
Is the AG motivated by the public interest or his own vested interest?
We recall another recent case when the Malaysian Attorney General dismissed corruption allegations against the Malaysian PM Najib Razak despite the Prima facie evidence saying the money that came into the PM's " personal bank account" was a " donation " from the Saudi Royal family.
It is not hard to see why cases such as these create the public perception that the " First Law Officer" instead of acting as the guardian of the public interest is in fact acting as the protector of the dubious dealings of his political masters, with whom his own interests are bound.
These attorney generals seek to defend the indefensible and in so doing do a disservice and injustice to their role.

Rajend Naidu

Remedy for this evil curse of rape and murder. Castrate rapists and hang murderers. Simple.

Shammima Ali and her lesbian and gay friends will cry foul and talk crap about the perpetrators human rights if this castration/noose concept is even talked about.

What about the dead victims or the rape victims rights?

The perpetrators, evil doers and perverts so-called rights stopped the minute they committed those dreadful crimes!

C'mon Frank and Aiyaz I bet you to have the balls in bringing about this penalty. Castrate the rapists and hang the murderers!

This way the prison population will decrease somewhat which would equate to less meals, prison clothes, toiletries etc and subsequently savings of thousands of dollars in taxpayers sweat in taxes.

Money saved could be better utilized in health and education.

Reacting to the union bashing the Liberal Party government has been engaged in as a scare campaign Garth Clark ( smh 16/04) said " I am more concerned with the vast amounts of money that developers are donating to the Liberal Party and the influence this inevitably buys".
Has there been any of that happening in Fiji since the Bainimarama " clean up " takeover?

Editor,
Corrupt Prime Minister
That's what Malaysia's former PM thinks of the current one. Former Malaysian premier Dr Mahathir Mohammed calling for PM Najib Razak to resign over the 1MDB state fund scandal, has applied for a court order to freeze Najib's assets.
Mahathir was also seeking a court order for Najib to disclose all assets under his name as well as the names of his nominees.
Mahathir, along with two other former members of the ruling United Malay National Organisation (UMNO) party which Najib currently heads, filed a suit in March against Najib alleging corruption and abuse of power...
Wow! That's really something. Not an Opposition politician, not a fierce critic but a former prime minister belonging to the same ruling party making the allegation of corruption and abuse of power against the current PM... Read more in the article 'Malaysia's Mahathir seeks court order to freeze PM's assets' in Reuters 19/04.
