Bainimarama told 'lift travel bans' or it's just talk

The pressure is on for Frank Bainimarama to lift the travel bans on citizens and New Zealand journalists who’ve been blacklisted for speaking out against the military regime.

It follows Bainimarama’s visit to Australia and New Zealand, where he announced that any journalist would be free to visit and report without restriction, once they’ve been accredited by the Department of Information.

Field has a poke at Bainimarama and co.
Bainimarama has also urged Fijians in Australia to take advantage of dual citizenship to return and ‘build a house or start a business’ and 'come and go as they please' as global travellers.

Reaction to Bainimarama’s ‘generous’ invitation have ranged from amusement to scorn.

Fairfax journalist Michael Field, who was banned years ago, is keeping mum but has today posted on his Facebook a piss take of Bainimarama’s fear of leaving Fiji in case of a revolt, except for when it comes to rugby.

The photo shows two of the coup leader's closest acolytes with the quip: "Frank’s at the rugby, time for another coup? I know how to do them.”

Banned: Brij and Padma Lal
Some Fiji folk have also called on TVNZ journalist Barbara Dreaver, to have a go at Bainimarama since he’s now on her turf. Dreaver was also banned some years ago.

The National Federation Party says the ban on citizens needs to be removed immediately, to allow Fiji citizens to return to the land of their birth, otherwise it’s just tokenism.

“The name of academics Professor Brij Lal and his wife, Dr Padma Lal, as well as other individuals who have been placed on this list for frivolous, undemocratic reasons, must be removed if the Prime Minister really wants to show the world Fiji is a robust democracy,” says leader Tupou Draunidalo.

Draunidalo has also questioned how much was spent on Bainimarama’s trip to Australia and New Zealand and those in the entourage.

Draunidalo: asking questions
“…. why was the Commissioner of Police accompanying the Prime Minister to a Fiji Day function at the same time when the DPP’s Office has confirmed the inefficiencies of his office in detaining members of the Opposition, including the NFP Leader, Professor Biman Prasad…?”

She says the Commissioner of Police should be at home attending to the “spiraling crime cases, police brutality" instead of resorting to  "the all too easy, draconian solution of arming the Police Force.”

Dradunidalo says an NFP Government will remove the blacklist and repeal the excessive powers given to the Immigration Minister, Prime Minister or any other minister, public official or organisation that is not fair or just.

The party says it will also reduce the allowances and emoluments of Ministers and Assistant Ministers.

Daily travel allowances for Parliamentarians got a massive 300 percent increase on the old rate originally decreed in October 2014.

Editor’s Note: In New Zealand, Bainimarama has
Bainimarama in Australia. pic Bob Barker News Corp Australia
downplayed differences with Prime Minister John Key blaming media for ‘unrelentingly negative and unbalanced reporting’, saying away from the media gaze the atmosphere between them was ‘very cordial and we got on famously.’ In Australia he made light of the fact the Malcolm Turnbull government did not have a senior minister meet him, saying Turnbull and co was ‘having Parliament at the moment.’ Bainimarama's visit coincided with the Australian Rugby Union announcement that Fiji will join the National Rugby Championship next year.

Anon 11.26. I am guessing you are a person of color in other words a brown or black skinned person. If you are than congratulations on Trumps win. The most pathetic human being on the planet is a black men who cheers for his white master despite the white master calling him a nigger and treating him like a dog. Donald Trump hates colored and Black folks. He refused black folks from staying in his apartments. He believes in the superiority of the white race. He hates Latinos. He treats women like shit. Basically the guy is a con man and Americans have voted him in. The fact that you support this loon is a testimony to your intellect. If you lived in Fiji you will note that our sea level is rising to the point where people are being displaced from the coastal areas. Trump does not believe in Global warming and is a a science denier. We in the Pacific feel the real affects of Global warming. Have you noticed that his support is mostly from states that don't see the sea. Perhaps these folks don't get fresh air or there heads are so far up their ass that they can only see shit just you like you. The world is heading towards an ice berg and we are all sitting in the titanic with Donald the motherfucker as the captain.

@anon 2.21pm Unlike the US election which saw Trump triumph despite all the predictions of a Clinton win, the Fiji 2014 election outcome was Pre- determined. The voting only allowed the people to go through the " democratic " motions. Only one party was going to win that election - The dictator Frank Bainimarama's Fiji First Theft Party. No amount of Bulshit from you or anyone else can hide that fact.

Trump doesn't believe in global warming. Well the advocate of global warming Al Gore predicted that the Arctic ice would be gone by 2013. But in contrast Arctic ice increase by 50% in 2012. Tuvalu was predicted to be underwater by now, is it??
Globalisation is just another money-making gimmick supported by some scientists to fool the planet.

Editor,
WHY Trump Won
In his letter ' Trump's White Wave' ( Fiji Times 11/11 ) Rajesh Ishwar Lingam says " Republican Donald Trump was elected the 45th president through the assistance of millions of white voters". He presents a partial explanation for Trump's win as if it's the whole.
For a broader, deeper and fuller analysis see Waleed Aly's article ' US election 2016 : It's not about racism or sexism, it's about class warfare' ( Canberra Times 11/11 ).
Aly draws on the stats from American media to inform us that " ... Trump did better with black voters than Mitt Romney did in 2012. He did better with Latinos, too. In the end, he won the vote of white women handily, despite the parade of them who came out in recent months to accuse him of violating them..."
So what was Trump's more broad based appeal to the American voters?
Again Aly tells us, " Suspicious of free trade, disparaging of corporate behemoth , preaching that big money is screwing the little guy, thoroughly anti-globalisation...this message ... how progressive politics has abandoned its working class concerns..." has,in the final analysis, catapulted this unlikely presidential candidate to power.
Trump's ascendency tells us a great deal about the disenchantment of the masses with mainstream politics .
And, THAT is true not only of America but other democracies around the world, both developed and developing, in the vulturistic clutch of big money corporations hell bent on plundering the environment and screwing the ordinary people to satisfy their greed for profit and power.
It is an irony in the American context that the disenchantment has come to a point where the masses have put their faith in a predatory capitalist pig to bring about radical social change!
Will that happen?
Your guess on that is as good as mine.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Yes Al Gore did exaggerate a bit but that does not change the facts. The arctic ice is not up by 50% far from it. Every scientific research is showing that it is melting at an alarming rate. So much so that Greenland is predicted to be Ice free in a few years. Kiribati and Tuvalu is loosing land everyday. Their drinking water is contaminated with salt and growing food is increasingly hard for them. Why do you think Kiribati has bought land in Fiji. The world is increasingly divided by those with intellect and facts and dumb ass morons like you who think everything is a fucking conspiracy. Trump said it right that climate change is the biggest hoax brought before people. Frank is a Fiji Junior failure but pretends to a Master of all Sciences. He doesn't even know the molecular formula of water but wants to talk about climate change at a world level. Make use of untouched higher lands in Fiji to build homes and cultivate them for who are going to be affected. Frank and his ministers should help out the affected people by sacrifying their over-paid salaries. Think about Fiji's oldest party - this is best for Fiji, believe me.

But our mediocre leader is a small fry in the big global scheme of things. Not Trump. He is a key player in that scheme for instance on the issue of climate change. Editor,
Understanding the Trump Phenomenon
In his excellent article ' History repeats : another despot rises to the top on a wave of discontent ' ( comment 12/11 ), Sydney Morning Herald political editor, Peter Hartcher , provides well researched, illuminating and succinct answers on why Trump won the US presidential election - the way he did.
When a critical mass of the population come to feel left out and stuck at the bottom of the social pyramid with no hope of upward mobility, it presents an ideal political environment for social dissent and for the rise to the top of a demagogue and despot who exploits the discontent against the status quo.
History has shown that time and again. But humanity has not drawn any enduring lessons from history ( dating back from the time of Plutarch's warning some 650 BC) .
That's why we continue to witness the Trump phenomenon.
I think this analysis provides a better explanatory framework for interpreting Trumps rise to power than the narrow, reductionistic racial one which is a partial explanation purporting to be the whole.
Now Trump won fair and square under the peculiar electoral system the US has . It's the same electoral system under which Obama won two terms of office. Those people who are unhappy, upset and angry about Trump's election as president need to settle down if they are genuinely committed to democracy. Trump has the mandate to rule ( within the prescribed and proscribed position of the office of the US President).
My reading of politics is that Trump will not perform any miracles during his 4 or even 8 years in office to " make America great again". America and the indeed the world will not change radically within that relatively short period in the life of a nation.
America has not changed all that much after Obama's progressive administration.
I suspect it will be the same with Trump notwithstanding his anti this and anti that political platform.
Time will tell.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

That's very straightforward. Disband SODELPA and all other opposition parties and form a Fiji United Party to contest against Fiji First Party so that the people have a clear, unambiguous choice.
Can the opposition gang do this in the national interest? Or, will they continue to be preoccupied with their irrelevant, parochial politics?

It's That Narcissistic Man Again
The property developer and former deputy mayor Salim Mehajer was arrested in the Spanish party island Ibiza with a handful of his friends.( Canberra Times 15/11).
The man still has cases pending back home in Australia including that of electoral fraud. He has had a case regarding violence and abuse of his wife.
Just a few days before the US election The Age did an editorial on Donald Trump titled 'This man is not fit for office' . The same is true for some of our mob.
At least Trump has come to be president elect in a transparent manner under the American electoral system.
There are doubts about the election of our own home- grown deputy mayor Mehajer.
Many people get to the top when they are clearly unfit to be there.
That's the downside of democracy.
It's hardly a perfect system but it's the best we have notwithstanding the likes of Mehajer or Trump gravitating to power.
Any Mehajers in the new Fiji?

I also agree that regardless what has been said in the forum FFP has the support of Indians and some Fijians in the country.

State Sanctioned Terrorism
Just watched Bombshell : the sinking of the rainbow warrior. The story of the covert operation of French secret service agents in the bombing of the Greenpeace nuclear free pacific campaign ship the rainbow warrior in Auckland harbour. It's the story of how one man who had left his wife and two young children on the other side of the world ( in Netherland ) came to fight against French nuclear testing in our part of the world. He wanted a better world for his children and for humanity and in that cause lost his life through state sponsored murder.
The world we live in today is a better place only because of the commitment of man like Fernado Pereira to make it that way.
We must never forget that.
And, we must never forget also that the State - any state - is capable of committing all sorts of abuses against citizens they regard as a threat to their political agenda.

Police Professionalism
In the post on Bombshell : The Rainbow Warrior Story I forgot to mention the highly professional and diligent manner in which the NZ police carried out its investigation into the bombing and murder without succumbing to the fact that the case was political and had " State level" implications.
What also struck me was the police acknowledging openly that they were led astray initially in their investigation by their " prejudice " against the anti- nuclear activists. But they subsequently left no stone unturned to get to the bottom of the bombing and hauling those responsible to court and tracing their connection to the highest levels of the French State.
They provide an excellent example of how the police force is meant to function in a democracy.

Last week, all nine men were found guilty of the charges laid.

This morning, judge Justice Aruna Aluthge said the application was employed as a delaying tactic.

Meanwhile, defence counsel also asked the court for additional time to file the mitigating submissions and to present three witnesses.

Standing Tall on the World Stage
Who would have thought a day would come when Fiji's coup maker PM Frank Bainimarama would be counselling the President elect of the United States on the stance to adopt on a major international issue?
But that's precisely what PM Bainimarama did in his UN address at Marrakash, Morocco when he made a special appeal to Donald Trump for " a personal change of heart and a public change of policy on the issue of climate change" ( Fiji Times 17/11 ).
He said " I appeal to you to show the leadership that the rest of the world expects the US to take on the issue".
All right thinking people on Planet Earth would agree.
I hope on the home front Bainimarama too can show leadership with a change of heart and policy regarding the arbitrary banning from Fiji of Professor Lal and his wife.

Lining Up Lapdogs in Governent.
See the parallels in Annette Gilmour's letter ' Triggs dumping opens way for human rights lapdog' ( Canberra Times 18/11 ). She writes :
" Malcolm Turnbull has announced that Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs will not be granted an extension on her contract when it ends next year.
Is the government now going to headhunt a suitably qualified lapdog to replace Ms Triggs so that the resistance to its in humane treatment of refugees can be diminished?
The Coalition's treatment of Ms Triggs has been little short of deplorable...
Ms Triggs has been vilified and denigrated for trying to do her job with great conscience and to stand against the bullying tactics of a very poor government. Shame, shame".
When a government in a post coup banana republic behaves that way it is understandable. When the government in an advance democracy like Australia ( which is seeking a spot in the UN's human rights council) behaves that way - it is indeed a shameful.
But perhaps Australia too has been reduced to become a banana republic of a kind ( see The Banana Republic edited by Ray Broomhill).

Climate Change impacts National Security: Teleni
06:23 Today
Taken from/By: FBC News
Report by: Elenoa Turagaiviu

National security is at risk now more than ever due to climate change says National Security Strategy Review Committee chair, Esala Teleni.

Speaking in Labasa during a public consultation on the National Security Strategy policy paper, Teleni says climate change brings with it new security challenges.

“The movement of settlements from coastline to inland that will impact on national security because it will impact on the culture of the people. They are moving to new grounds. They occupy new places and that will challenge the leadership to make sound decisions so that there is no threat to our national security.”

He says the National Security Strategy was put together to enable Fiji to respond to the ever changing security environment.

The National Security Strategy Review Committee is in Tukavesi, in the Cakaudrove Province, to hold similar consultations.

It reminds me of the song " follow the leader leader"
To put it in proper perspective , it's simply BS. There is no greater threat whatsoever on our national security other than the vicious attack in the name of selfgreed and power that the institution responsible for our security had carried out upon the democratically elected government of Fiji 4 times since 1987. When the army/navy took leadership at gunpoint our national security is threatened not climate change.

The only security Bainimarama , Teleni and all their cronies are concerned with is their own security to rule the country without any opposition. Their security is threatened by the opposition. This is the reason for the clampdown on the opposition.

Fijian Democracy
As a victim of Rabuka's 1987 military coup and the rape of democracy in Fiji I am no Rabuka fan. But if his claim that there is " an apparent policy of banning Opposition MPs from officiating at school awards ceremonies" is true ( Rabuka ' banned ' Fiji Times 18/11 ), than clearly Fiji still has a fair way to go in restoring full democracy following the Bainimarama military coup of 2006 and the holding of democratic elections in 2014.
If the leaders of Opposition parties ( Rabuka of SODELPA and Professor Biman Prasad of NFP, as reported in Fijileaks) is being banned from such a school function, it makes one wonder just what kind of democracy Fiji currently has under the mob in power?

In his letter ' Thailand in search of the right course for democracy ' ( The Southeast Asia Times 14/11 ) Songdej Praditsmanont says " ... we may have had dozens of coups since 1932 but that is our way of seeking the right way to democracy..."
Sounds to me more like a rationalisation for the repeated departure from democracy, often made by those who stand to gain from the departure.
In Fiji we have been caught up in the same rigmarole with the latest coup makers claiming they are seeking to establish " true democracy " in Fiji for the first time.
Independent observers know that was not what the coup was about. It was a power grab - pure and simple.
No amount of sugar coating can hide that brutal fact.

@anon 4.19 pm , the democracy put in place by Bainimarama and Khaiyum has resulted in an intimidated, cowered media now engaged in self- censorship for their self- preservation. Such a media cannot fulfill its public watchdog duty - the duty to hold power to account.
If you can't see that then you clearly have a problem with your mental faculty.

Climate Change Contradiction
Lunik Liu of Sydney is all praise for PM Voreqe Bainimarama's " plea to Donald Trump not to ignore the plight of Pacific Island nations affected by climate change" ( Letter, Fiji Times 20/11 ).
I share the sentiment .
But I remain perplexed by what Professor Wadan Narsey said in his letter ' Who gave permits for marine environment destruction?' (FT 14/12/13 ). He said :
" Many members of the public maybe reassured by recent statements from Commodore Bainimarama and Mr Khaiyum that environmental protection is a paramount objective of their government. Can either of them explain therefore, who gave permission for the cutting down of hundreds of acres of valuable mangrove ( tiri ) (a) between Gratham Road and Fletcher Road (b) Nasese (c) Lami (d) Veisari?"
I thought charity begins at home and it is on the home front that climate change protection action should be undertaken first.
Otherwise, we all know, talk is cheap.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

In A Robust Democracy
A citizen can write the following letter to editor and the media can publish it without fear of reprisals.
John Sandilands writes in his letter ' Disgraceful Turnbull ' ( Canberra Times 21/11 ), " The dishonourable treatment of Gillian Triggs [ Australian Human Rights Commission president] is disgraceful. Malcolm Turnbull might recall himself saying people " cannot expect to have their term renewed". This also applies to you, Prime Minister".
Indeed it does in a democracy like Australia .
That of course is not the case in a democracy where the Prime Minister has come to office via a military coup or in cases in Africa, Latin America and Asia where Presidents and Prime Ministers often extend their stay in power without bothering about constitutional niceties!

Editor,
Perpetuating A Development Myth
Peter Hartcher, the political editor of the Sydney Morning Herald states in his article ' The moment the US gave the world to China ' ( comment 22/11 ) that, " An open, global trading and investment system has allowed poor countries to trade their way to prosperity. And it allows rich countries to grow even richer".
The second statement is true and indisputable. The first is part of the myth of global free trade and development. The reality in the poor countries has actually been rather different. Instead of the purported " road to prosperity" it has often been a road to impoverishment. To get some sense of this reality see Walter Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa and Susan George's A Fate Worse Than Debt and her other works which critique conventional development.
Hartcher perpetuates the conventional myth when he writes " The historic significance [ of global free trade ] is that America has provided a global public good for the past 70 years ".
No it hasn't.
What it has done is to create a First World in Third World poor countries and a Third World in affluent First World countries.
The result is the very divided and unequal world we live in with its entrenched social problems, social exclusion and violence and conflict. The existing global free trade and investment regime has not delivered its promise of a better world for humanity at large.
It has cartered for an elitist class everywhere.

Ministry looks into school dropout issues
06:10 Today

Taken from/By: FBC News
Report by: Praneeta Prakash

The Education Ministry is looking at issues which contribute to students dropping out of school.

Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy says every year around 16,000 students sit for year 8 Exams and similar numbers sit for the Year 6 Examination.

However the numbers decrease significantly by Year 13.
He says transportation, tuition and text books are no longer an issue and in this regard has called on parents to be more supportive.

“What happens to this other 9000 students? About half only end up in year 13. We want parents to play a very important, critical and supporting role to motivate children to go to school, attend school.”

Year 8 results have been released by the Ministry and are available from schools and district offices from today.

Dr Reddy is quoted to have said in the news item that..." transportation, tuition and textbooks are no longer an issue "

Really...really??

Lest we forget that the costs of living have unceremoniously ballooned within the 13 years’ school journey!! Oh..and not mention the fact that majority of working parents earnings remain stagnant or with wee tiny increase within that 13 year school journey since independence. Even with the even distribution of the 6 monthly lease monies (to itaukei) may have helped in some cases, still the probable lack of innovation for intentional Rural revenue generating projects are minimal. Same plot old cassava patch on the side of the road or village efforts remain the same with Rokos' and Commissioner doing preretirement work and out their go..

Is ‘it the question of Fiji needing a more revolutionary leader to really be sensitive to the needs of the masses?

We’ve had dignified Chiefs and stern faced Military officers, and sparingly a Medical Doctor and Unionist as PM. One trait in common to all these well-meaning men, all end up being stubborn politician where their daily executive decisions and designs depends more on those governance gurus in the adjoining offices.

Isn’t it time for a commoner like those in my NFP to take on the baton of leadership as PM?...or a collision of Religious leaders or a Religious Leader to step up and step in.

National elections is just around the corner, or would it be earlier than expected…and all sane deduction are that my Tauvu Bainimarama will be again the next PM, given that the grand coalition but SODELPA, NFP, FLP etc is playing right into his political hands…lol…lol…

..or would there be changes in the campaign strategies and political manoeuvring by those who are desirous to unseat Pharaoh and his side kick??

tick...tock...tick...

Two ladies were reading the tomb stone in their walk around the graveyard and came across a tombstone with the words' True Gentlemen and Politician"

Big Man Driving With Arrogance
Fijileaks (20/11 ) captures the issue : ' Australia cracks down on diplomats who disregard road rules, refuse to pay fines ; Fiji was worst offender ,with 35 unpaid fines totalling $9,904'.
So who are these diplomats?
Albert M White tells " Protesting diplomats assigned to Australia, living in luxury unknown in their home country, are frequently apparatchiki of dictatorial regimes" ( Canberra times 22/11 ).
These diplomats are products of patronage politics at home.
Their diplomatic post is reward for backing the mob in power.
Fijileaks gives us an example of one of that variety of diplomats : ' Ambassador to Fraud Suspect : Now, another Indo- Fijian regime lackey Kamlesh Arya who claimed 2006 coup was coup to end all coups, charged with Abuse of Office and General Dishonesty to Cause Loss!' ( 22/11 ).
In Fiji Hindi there is a saying in reference to the driving habits of the Big Man types. It's said they drive around as if it's their father's road.
In Fiji they get away with that because they are well connected with the mob in power.
They make the mistake of thinking they can do the same in Australia and get away .
Well, they can't.

Now, in the new Fiji a former prime minister ( Rabuka ) and the leader of an Opposition party ( Professor Biman Prasad of NFP ) can't get invited to school functions without being cleared by God knows who!

Your idea of a religious leader stepping in to lead the country may be a solution.

It should be one of the cult leaders that is against schooling and they could then close all the schools, redeploy the teachers and save the tax payer a fortune.

This would be possible as it was suggested by some village leaders in an article today that all unemployed youths in the urban areas could be rounded up, sent back to the village where they could earn a lot of money planting.

Tuesday, November 22, 2016
Update: 3:36PM EIGHT Police officers and a military officer convicted of rape, sexual assault and perverting the course of justice were jailed by the Lautoka High Court this afternoon.

Manasa Talala and Seruvi Caqusau were sentenced to 8 years imprisonment with a non parole period of 5 years. Kelevi Sewatu, Penaia Drauna and Senitiki Natakasavu received 7 years imprisonment each with a non-parole period of 4 years. Filise Vere, Viliame Vereivalu, Jona Davonu and Pita Matairavula were imprisoned for 9 years and wont be eligible for parole for 6 years.

The nine were each charged with the rape and sexual assault of Vilikesa Soko and Senijeli Boila. Mr Soko succumbed to his injuries and later died whilst in custody.

Talala and Vereivalu were also charged with defeating the course of justice by instructing other police officers to make false statements.

Justice Aruna Aluthge in his judgment delivered last week found all accused persons guilty of all charges and convicted them accordingly.

Bankrupt Leadership
In her leader ' PM's refusal to discount Dutton's divisive views does him no credit ' ( ct 24/11 ) Annette Gilmour points out, quite correctly I my view , that " The continued refusal of our Prime Minister [ Malcolm Turnbull ] to rein in or even discount the racist and divisive utterances of Peter Dutton [ Immigration Minister ] is a significant denial of his responsibilities as a leader of our multiracial and diverse [ democratic ] nation. .. His failure leaves a vacuum of moral leadership... "
It does.
But we have people like that parked in power.
Take for instance the coup installed PM of Fiji Frank Bainimarama who said " I stand by my men " when 9 men from the military and police were charged for the torture, rape and murder of Soko. His handpicked police commissioner went to sit in court . But the presiding Sri Lankan judge did not buy into the nonsense and sentenced Bainimarama's men to long terms in jail.
It would be interesting to see how long this upstanding judge remains a judge in the " New Fiji" of Bainimarama and Khaiyum's creation?

He knows full well that he is on a win win course, if the opposition stay separated as now they will all continue to be known as individuals with no vision and no go in them.

If they form a coalition it will simply be three individuals in a group and you can't make something out of nothing.

One solution is a Trump, a non politician with proven track record of business. But we all know that will not happen because Fiji does not have one that would be acceptable.

So there is no need to even worry about things, nothing is going to change !

When I read in the Fiji Times 24/11 that " The Sugar Ministry has ordered an investigation into allegations that former Fiji Sugar Corporation executive chairman Abdul Khan may have abused his office for personal gain..." for some reason I was not surprised. Could it be because this has become an all too common thing in the Bainimarama-Khaiyum regime?
The mob who took over purportedly to " clean up " the rot generated by the Qarase Government has produced a good deal of rot themselves.
It is good to see from the Fijileaks write-up ' Sugar-Coating $31million loss must not go unchallenged . NFP calls for immediate independent investigation against the former FSC executive chairman Abdul Khan for making FSC ' insolvent' " that the Opposition is actively engaged in holding the mob in power to account.
That is the only way to ensure the public good, and not the special interests of the regime cronies, is being served.

Why sex crimes at old age

Friday, November 25, 2016

Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa at the Rewa Provincial Council meeting at Nadave, Bau in Tailevu yesterday.

ITAUKEI men over 50 years of age spend most of their time with their grandchildren and this is one of the reasons why sex-related crimes are prevalent among the iTaukei community at such an old age, the Fiji Corrections Service has revealed.

The team highlighted this during their presentation at the Rewa Provincial Council meeting in Nadave yesterday.

A representative from the team said companionship was required at such an age and absence of such could trigger such indecent feelings, which lead to committing of such criminal acts.

The team also revealed to the vanua of Rewa that 21 of the 55 sons of the province who are incarcerated at Fiji Corrections facilities around the country are based at Naboro Corrections facility for committing sex-related crimes.

The team stated that FCS also has counselling and recovery programs in place to rehabilitate and assist those who commit these acts.

During their presentation, the Corrections Service team said ensuring that those who commit such acts were well rehabilitated was of critical importance to ensure that they did not commit such indecent acts again.

Meanwhile, a team from the Fiji Police Force also highlighted that conflict over money between married couples was an issue in the area.

The team said that the police were trying their best to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the province.

We note from Tukai Lagonilakeba's letter ' River waste ' ( Fiji Times 28/11 ) that the old problem of river pollution is still very pervasive in the new Fiji that Bainimarama's " clean up " coup has purportedly ushered in. And, we also note from Tukai's letter that the Nadi Town Council has " a proactive expatriate CEO " who is appealing to with his suggestion on dealing with the Nadi River pollution.
So what kind of " revolution " did the Bainimarama coup bring about when Fiji still needs an expatriate to run a local town council?
And what kind of civil service " reforms " ( which we have heard so much talk about ) have taken place after the Bainimarama takeover when we have a letter writer Tomasi Boginiso ( ft 28/11 )complaining about the ' disappointing service ' at a government department?

If you were to get out into the big wide world I suspect that you would find just about every country has it's critics of its government departments, some complaints founded, some unfounded.

But you are far too engrossed and busy in your vendetta against the government to do anything other than cut and paste others positive contribution and twist and turn them into tools to boost your inflated ego.

Try picking a subject in Fiji where you feel you could make a positive contribution using your own original ideas. Try doing this without sarcasm and attempting to appear clever, otherwise you will just remain appearing as an insignificant keyboard warrior.

Decrease in crimes against women and children
13:01 Today
Taken from/By: Google
Report by: Savaira Tabua

A decrease of 2.5% in overall crimes against women and 0.1% for crimes against children has been recorded until October this year compared to last year.

This was highlighted by Police Commissioner, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho, while addressing participants at the Corporate Capabilities Need Assessment (CCNA) workshop in Sigatoka this morning.

Brigadier General Qiliho says the common crimes against women are rape, indecent assault, murder, assault causing bodily harm and common assault offences.

The victims are mostly between the ages of eight to thirty-one years.
So far this year over one thousand crimes against children were recorded, a decrease of 0.1% compared to 2015.

Brigadier General Qiliho says female victims aged between thirteen to seventeen make up 41% of the rape cases reported between January to October this year.

The reduction in the crimes according to Qiliho never truly reflect the reality since there are some incidents that remain unreported

The 2018 election in Fiji is for the opposition to lose. There is a general feeling among the people that we need change and need it now.
If the opposition do not unite and form a good strong multiracial party with credible members than the election is for them to lose. I think the level of dislike for FF is at fever pitch and all one needs to do is give the people of Fiji a credible alternative to this bunch of thugs and we have a winner.

The problem with the opposition is their lack of cohesion. They need to organize now and use every means necessary from social media to direct foot campaigning to get their message to the people. People want change but they do not want to get off the fry pan and into the fire. The ball is in the oppositions court.

I find nothing odd in this. It merely confirms Fiji has a phoney democracy. The dictatorship has adorned a democratic garb to win international acceptance. Remember the same mob who committed all manner of human rights abuses after the coup is still in power with their henchmen, including the dictatorship installed Human Rights Commissioner.
Anyone who expects this mob to show a genuine commitment to human rights is politically naive. They are merely going through the expected motions.

I think we got to move on.its been over 345 comments and the crux of the message, it's been all talk. The good doctor and the missus will never come home. However the good news is that our PM is off to Europe. It's been his 3rd trip abroad since this question was been posed. Too good...

Corruption rife as always. Frequent buzz doing it's rounds here in the Sugar City centers on the "public servants" enforced to maintain the rule of law but doing the opposite! I'm talking about the men/women in black & white or navy blue. 2 laws being enforced. The normal grassroots face the real law and the rich and powerful a different law. There is a pilot who was investigated a few months ago about some issue and even was suspended by the employer from what I hear when investigations were carried out. With compelling evidence against him he managed to brainwash the law enforcers with his "praise the lord brother" personality. Nek minute he is wearing his uniform again and flying the 737. A few weeks ago his wife reported against him for physical abuse at the same lautoka police station. Nek minute he is flying again...saying praise the lord to everyone in his path. Justice here is a laugh! ha ha ha ha...

Editor,
Regime Lackeys Strategically Placed in the Governmental System to do the Bidding of the Twin Dictators of Fiji.
We read in the Fijileaks article ' Supervisor of Elections Saneem clearly disobeyed the Electoral Commission and exposed his partiality when he allowed FFP candidate Bala to stand for elections. Appeals Court judges side with Commission' ( 29/11 ) that " That decision of Saneen with legal advice from the SG's office, allowed the entry of FF minister Parveen Bala to be a candidate for the Bainimarama - Khaiyum party; the Electoral Commission had ruled that Bala was not eligible to stand for election.
The Fiji Court of Appeal also rules that Saneem must comply with decisions and directions given to him concerning the performance of his functions by the Electoral Commission, meaning he must not take instructions and directions from Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum".
In a true democracy that is how an independent Supervisor of Elections is meant to conduct himself. But Fiji is not a true democracy. The SOE Saneem was installed in that position by Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum to do his bidding. How could he not take instructions and directions from Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum?
Because he knew he was under the political patronage of the twin dictators of Fiji the regime lackey Saneem had no problem in showing his arse to the Electoral Commission.
The same is true for that other regime lackey - the Solicitor General.
It's not hard to see why Saneem allowed Bainimarama -Khaiyum party to use the stolen Fiji First Party name despite the protest from the original name owners - because he is a regime lackey.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Editor,
CORRUPTION AMONG THE TOP DOGS
We learn from the Canberra Times article ' IMF chief Christine Lagarde found guilty of negligence ' ( 20/12 ) that she was found guilty of criminal charges of misuse of public funds during her time as France's finance minister. The verdict could mean saying goodbye to her post.
French judges have found the IMF chief guilty of negligence for failing to challenge a 400 million euro state arbitration payout to a business tycoon in 2008 when she was French finance minister.
The trial revived concerns in France about high-level corruption, shinning a spotlight on intimate ties between politicians and businesspeople, and on large sums that are sometimes used to grease the country's political wheels.
Any of THAT ties in the " New Fiji " of Frank Bainimarama and Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum?
Sincerely,

Editor,
US allies, Britain and Germany, have protested against Trump's immigrant travel ban ( ABC 24 News 31/1 ). Australia has not. What is one to make of that?
Australian PM Turnbull is happy that Australian dual citizenship holders have been exempted by the White House.
Sounds like a " I'm okay, Jack" outlook to the repugnant, racist Trump travel ban against Muslims.
That's shameful to say the least.

Editor,
Australia's refugee shame
An Iranian refugee has fled Australia's Manus Island detention centre in PNG to seek refuge in Fiji ( smh 28/01). Fiji has had four coups in as many decades of independence. But it is still considered a safer place than many others around the world, including its Pacific neighbour PNG. That must surely say something about the status of PNG - as a place of safety - and also about Australia's political decision to locate it's off shore refugee detention centre there.
There is clearly a need to rethink that decision. Many more expert people, both domestic ( doctors, health workers, social workers and refugee advocates ) and international ( the UN and Amnesty International ) have pointed out that need but the Australian State has not heeded the expert view.
That diminishes Australia's international standing and reputation.
By contrast Canada has declared it stands ready to accept refugees fleeing terror, war and persecution.
Australia can have a more progressive refugee and asylum seeker regime.
What is missing conspicuously is the right political will.
And that, is a crying shame.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu
