Fiji Police & Army caught up in another brutality case against 'suspects'

Terrified: Three men who've endured bush style police brutality.

All too familiar: we have seen police do this before.
Another appalling example of Fiji police brutality with officers beating people suspected of owning marijuana farms in Navosa.

Photos of the brutality meted out at one drug raid have gone viral with the Police Commissioner promising a thorough investigation after seeing the evidence of his men's heavy handed treatment.

The photos as posted here, show three men with blood on their faces, shirtless and clearly scared.

In one picture, two of the men are lying on the ground with their hands tied behind them. All three of the men are doused in what looks to be white flour. In a later photo, one of the two men is no longer wearing a shirt. One of the soldiers is clearly armed.

It's understood the raid was a joint operation conducted by the army and police, called Operation Cavuraka.

The pictures were first posted by two i-taukei boys in Australia and the United States.

In a statement, Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho claims he was unaware of the operation and the brutality.

A statement attributed to him yesterday says he doesn't condone any abuse of powers by officers and action will be taken against those who do it:

I have been alerted about the photos circulating on social media regarding the alleged misconduct of officers who are part of Operation Cavuraka.

I can assure members of the public that I have ordered a thorough investigation be conducted to determine what took place.

During an earlier visit to the Operation team in Keiyasi, I had stressed the need to respect the rights of suspects and any reports indicating otherwise will be dealt with accordingly.

I do not condone any of my officers abusing their powers and necessary disciplinary action will be taken against those who do.

BRIGADIER GENERAL SITIVENI QILIHO

COMMISSIONER OF POLICE

Fiji authorities will hate being reminded about it but these pictures bring back the terror and brutality used by police and army officers on prisoners in recent times.

Few will have forgotten the 9 minute, 11 second video showing the terrorising of 24 year old Iowane Benedito, ann incident which both Frank Bainimarama and former police minister, Ioane Naivalurua, tried to protect the perpetrators.

I don't know whether some people in Fiji are worser than animals or just complete sub humans.Anybody heard the news about a baby been dumped in the dumpster in savusavu yesterday? The picture is circulating on social media, even animals don't even do these things.

Rabuka's denials of the allegations against him did not end the controversy. On 14 May 2005, the New Zealand Herald reported in its Weekend Herald edition that the Fiji police force was close to making a decision on whether to charge certain unnamed individuals, one of whom the Herald believed to be Rabuka. The report quoted Police Commissioner Andrew Hughes as saying that a major hindrance to their investigation was a "cone of silence" among the close associates of the suspects.

Of course, he was guilty.
Say no to Rabuka!!!
Sodelpa must get back to the drawing table. Great that Kepa didn't accept hus tabua!!!

Rabuka is why violence became "tolerable" in Fiji. We also put up with corrupt courts, like in the case of that politician who killed a man with his car... all that violence, corruption is the legacy of Rabuka, the man who failed Fiji. The man behind the collapse of the National Bank.

Rabuka OUT!!!

"On 21 August, Rabuka said he was of the opinion that Prime Ministers defeated at the polls should not stand again. Former Prime Ministers remaining politically active led to instability, he said, pointing to recent political upheavals in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands as examples. "It is healthy for party leaders who become prime ministers after being defeated at general elections to take the responsibility for the defeat and bow out of active politics and just become an adviser or remain as a party supporter but not in the front seat running for another election."

"On 7 February 2006, Rabuka said that he was still considering whether to contest the forthcoming elections. He thought it "unwise", without elaborating, to contest seats in his native Cakaudrove, or those held by members of the Grand Coalition, and might contest only if an urban open constituency was available. He considered, however, that given his length of time out of politics, making a comeback would be difficult."

- wikipedia

The fact the man can not follow his own advice is somewhat disturbing.

"Rabuka identifies as a Christian.[19] He married Suluweti Tuiloma at RFMF officers mess in Nabua on 10 April 1975.[20] In 2000, he publicly admitted that he had been unfaithful to her, both before and after their marriage, and that he had fathered three children by two different women whist engaged to Suluweti."

Come on! You want that as a PM?
Shame on Sodelpa for the bad bad bad bad choice.

Who reckons Sodelpa will lose more seats in the next elections?what other parties are out there right now?One Fiji looks like it has a lot of potential but I was surprised to see them not win any seats in the previous elections, why was this?I hope in the next election they do come forward with an even more stronger campaign and a bigger budget.

@2:02 PM
Yeah I think Sodelpa is a dead horse too. Rabuka was the nail in the coffin. Sodelpa will probably lose a few seats. Will see what happens with "Plan B".
My theory about Rabuka is that the Sodelpa voters are somewhat weak, so they voted a "strong" leader in, nothing like a former dictator isn't? He is a kind of Trump (but not smart with $$$$). Weak people need "strong" leaders... Only strong people can vote for more civilized candidates (less narcissist).

One Fiji needs to get better known, and most voters are quite conservative. They will tend to vote for old parties, there is no room for independent candidates I believe.

Something is sure, an "indian" or an "itaukei" party can't win. It has to be a multi ethnic party.

Praveen Bala killed a person and now he is acquitted. How can he live with the notion he killed some one. He must be having sleepiness night with the guilt. That Siri Lankan judge must have been thinking about his PR of Fiji.

@10:35 PM
I don't think he has sleepiness nights anymore, sadly.
The problem with corruption and absolute power is that it corrupts more and more.
Each time the bar is pushed up a little bit...

From the reaction on social networks, I see that even supporters of the regime are angry and schocked...
These kinds of decision will do a long term damage on Bainimarama's government.
the clean-up campaign has become very dirty indeed.

Clean up or cover up campaign hehehe whichever one wishes to put it only a deluded fool will fall for the dictator clap trap.

New story C4.5, Praveen Bala Acquitted.

The admit of guilt in Balas case holds nothing in this court of law. For the prosecution team where's the police investigator whose report was used in court? For lack of evidence and witness, the perpetrators word ( Balas own word and admit of guilt) on that police report was simply thrown out....
What's happening to our legal system, was there a panel of jury assigned to this case or is the Judge the jury himself?
Im not an attorney but this is a mockery on our legal system.
The sentencing must be appealed. Get a new set of team. Perhaps this time go for a jury to hear the case.

Correction.....How can he live with that guilt.
..He must be having sleepless nights...

Im all about forgiveness. Im positive our father the Almighty would not have blessed him with the Leadership of Sodelpa had God not warranted it. The Almighty is never wrong. Rabuka spoke to God in 87 and did what he thought to be right through divine intervention. I believe the Almighty has chosen the right person to be a vessel for change in Fiji.

We need to FORGIVE in order to move forward into a better christian country.

Rabuka a truelly devout christian deserves a second chance at the top.

Trust in the Almighty as he loves us all.

@Tomasi

Are you fucking stupid? "Rabuka a truelly devout christian"?

A devout christian does not commit Adulterous activities. You cannot call yourself a christian and then lasa i tuba. Sorry it doesn't work that way.EVER.

How the fark can you keep dribbling shit out of your mouth about God selecting a bloody narcissistic fuckwit to lead Fiji. Why would God choose this dickhead? Why? He collapsed our NBF. My family lost a lot of their money in that scandal.

Where was your God then? Did God speak to him to do it? Did God speak to him and tell him to commit Adulterous activities while with his wife? Then actually father other kids at the same time?

A real man/Leader would not do this to others.

Do not practice what you cannot preach.

People use Satan as an excuse to push the blame of their actions away from their own because of their spineless mistakes.

When will some idiots wake up to not blaming Satan. Fuck sakes

Is Rabuka going to be the next PM? Who said that he is? Why jump into the band wagon when it's not here yet.
Let the people decide on that in 2018.
His weakness with women is every men's challenge. If your not put through this test then your not a man. He is not the first to fall. President Clinton, PM Bob Hawke, King David were national leaders who failed the test but they came back after repenting.
So let's leave Rabuka alone and talk on the subject matter - the police brutality. Let them continue with what they are doing and let the law deal with it. If those tasked to uphold the law are the ones breaking it or obstruct the cause of justice then it's bad. The killing of 5 police officers in Dallas ,Texas by a lone gunman is the effect of police brutality on civilians. Someone maybe somewhere in Fiji will take the law on his own hands.

Whats happened to Bainimaraa's Flag?

Rabuka will change it. Hahaha.

Am not a Rabuka fan but wasn't Mrs. Kepa also being unfaithful with Tarr? We also know about Naiqama's tryst and impregnation of a 15 year old in his Koro. So where does Sodelpa find a perfect leader with clean hands? Karavaki??--but he is such an idiot. Tomasi pehaps?

Anonymous said...

Just too many people with selective memory's and brainwashed by religion talking shit as always.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous 11:44 AM

Tomasi would be the best choice as the 'perfect' leader as he's on speed dial to God so he should be able to pull in a few favours if we all shout loud enough.

Just shows you can teach these Fijians to read and write but they still will behave like sub human savages.
