All strangers as defined in Standing Order 24(2)(b) are to withdraw from the public gallery and this includes members of the public, the media and any person(s) who are not parliamentary staff except staff from Ministry of Finance and the Reserve Bank of Fiji. 2. The live feeds of the media organisations on air and via the internet are to be temporarily suspended. 3. The Hansard will record proceedings but they will not be included in tomorrow’s Daily Hansard. I will now suspend the sitting for 10 minutes to allow my Orders to be enforced, and I thank you all."

Residents of Vuda outside Lautoka have discussed their concerns about a spate of criminal activities in the area with the Divisional Police Commander West Marika Kotoisuva.
The residents requested a meeting because they are concerned about the how long it takes for police to attend to reports of crimes.
Kotoisuva assured the resident that a special team led by Lautoka Police Station Commander is looking into their concerns. He says police will increase their presence in the Vuda area. The residents have scheduled another meeting with police next Wednesday to discuss the progress of their concerns.

Public servants urged swap chilly Canberra for island paradise of Fiji
CANBERRA, 07 OCTOBER 2015 (CANBERRA TIMES) ----Commonwealth public servants are being tempted to leave their lives in chilly Canberra for a chance to ply their trade in a tropical Pacific paradise.
But there are a couple of catches – the destination is Fiji and the jobs, initially at least, are only open to public service high flyers.
On the upside, a stint underneath the palm trees could be just the thing to reinvigorate a bureaucratic career that might be feeling a little stale, according to the recruitment outfit helping with the hiring.
Human resources firm NGS Global says it is looking to hire 21 elite public servants “for roles at the highest echelons of the Fijian civil service as part of the Government's public sector renewal”.
The chairman of the Fiji Public Service Commission said the government was embarking on “an extensive and robust campaign to recruit the most competent and meritorious candidates for the various permanent secretary positions”.
NGS Global managing partner Marianne Broadbent said high level public servants from the Fijian diaspora were top of the nation's shopping list, but talented bureaucrats from all British Commonwealth nations were also being encouraged to apply.
“For people interested in making a difference, experiencing a different culture, a different lifestyle and I know there have been many people in our public services, both federal and state, who have spent some time working in other locations,” Dr Broadbent said.
“That often adds to the diversity of someone's experience.
“We think that it may well be attractive to people who might want to experience a different situation for a while in an area that might well be very rewarding.”
While the developing nation cannot match Canberra-level salaries, it is not all about the money.
“Some of the salaries might not be as high, but then the cost of living might not necessarily be as high either,” Dr Broadbent said.
“We don't expect people to be interested, necessarily, for financial reason but more for the experience and for the opportunity that it might afford them.”
Just don't expect a working holiday, the recruiter warned.
“Like in any location, even Canberra, you make of it what you choose.
“There would be many opportunities to explore a wide range of leisure activities, but our primary focus is on people who really are contributing in a work sense.”
No problem with getting the right person for the job if that means they have to come from elsewhere.
Where the problem lies is when those who are employed from overseas come here for an early retirement as some have so obviously done.

The Lautoka High Court has sentenced two men to eight years imprisonment after they were found guilty of two counts of rape.
The Court heard that Nacani Domo and Damasino Levi who are in their early thirties raped a 20-year-old mother after a traditional function in the village.

A FAMILY in Lami is still struggling to come to terms with the death of their young girl who was found by her grandmother hanging with a sulu tied to her neck last Friday.
In an interview on Tuesday, distraught grandmother Uttmi Devi recalled the last moments she spent with her granddaughter.
Ms Devi recalled the time, around 12.30pm when nine-year-old Tanisha Payal Prasad told her to go take her shower.
Tanisha was playing with her cousin.
After some time and as she was saying her prayers, another granddaughter called for her to go and see what had happened.
The 75-year-old was shocked and numb to see her granddaughter hanging from a sulu tied to the ceiling.
Ms Devi said they did mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on Tanisha, but it was too late. Mother Theresa Prasad said she and her husband were not at home and she referred all questions to police.
Fiji Police Chief of Intelligence and Investigations ACP Henry Brown said there had been allegations made with regards to the circumstances surrounding Tanisha's death, which had been classified as an unnatural death.

it has been agreed between FF and the youth leader of Sodelpa that the matter of the flag would be dealt in a more democratic way, hence the cancellation of the march planned by Waqavonovono today.
It has been agreed that the colonial flag should be replaced, but with a flag with historical significance to the people of Fiji.
The only real Fijian flag for Fiji is Cakobau's flag. If we are to be done with the Union Jack, then back to the good old flag, minus the shield as we are a republic and not a monarchy anymore,
That's why I think the next President should be a high chief from some traditionnal background, for a smooth transition.
Madraiwiwi would be the best choice I think.
I think that any person with a little bit of jugement would agree that Cakobau's flag is the best compromise to please everybody. I suspect it has been accepted by the different parties that it is a much better solution then those 23 crazy proposals we saw before.

GIVEN the recent slowdown in the global economy, Fiji still enjoys quite a very strong economy, IMF deputy managing director Min Zhu said.

Mr Gaspar said those challenges and other factors were posing important fiscal challenges, especially for emerging markets.

Over the years, he added Fiji was enjoying economic growth out of the country's political situations.
"The challenge remains because you (Fiji) have very strong growth and you have an overheating situation.
"The further measuring of fiscal policy, the further growth is sustainable and this is very important."
And given the global growth is slowing down, volatile capital market and volatile capital flow, he said more exercise on the macro resilience and put more exercise on structural reform was important for Fiji.
Shadow Minister of Finance, National Planning and Statistics Dr Biman Prasad said the IMF observation on Fiji's growth for 2015 was reasonable and made sense given the downside being experienced in the international economic environment.

I am not an Economist like Dr Biman but what happened in Parliament on that day tells me that Fiji is only 1 payment away from Bankruptcy.

@kua ni rere Income per head, just like GDP per head is not a good indicator. If income is so skewed towards the few who are well off with large incomes (100s or 1000s more times than the lower) then the per head measurement becomes meaningless.
GDP per capita, is supposed to give some kind of purchasing power parity value of all final goods and services produced within a country in a given year, per population. But it still gives no real purchasing power ability of individuals and it still does not tell us of every person can afford and obtain their minimum necessities of life. That is the most crucial thing for any life.What is happening before the people's eyes is INEQUALITY,the gap between the rich and poor has increased at a rapid rate yet opposition is too slow to mention this.We need to stop this mentality of sweeping things under the carpet and instead take action.Be more pro active,ridicule,expose and stop the demonizing lies of propaganda done by the puppets.

@6.30pm I would say to Vili Rakoro GDP is a very poor measure of well-being or equality. It simply tallies up the amount of money that has changed hands. A catastrophe (like a flood,burst water mains or hurricane) can increase GDP because repair works costs money so money changes hands, but then taking part in wars(UN Missions) raises GDP and so do car crashes and activities that destroy natural capital such as deforestation and mining. Nor does GDP indicate equality. The US is a good example where the GDP per head is high, but in terms of inequality the US is on a par with Uraguay and has higher infant mortality rates than Cuba (which incidentally, has no child malnutrition according to the UNICEF, unlike the US).

Economic growth is not associated with Fiji anymore. How can they claim a 4 5% growth over accumulated debts and ilegal scheme. They took funds from the FNPF to run the govt which is wrong. They are stealing retirement funds and using current employee/employer contributions to replenish them...this is outright thuggery -a porn scheme. The water shortages and problems are not permanently fixed. Developments in the most remote places are not made, if made there were no maintenance and improvements.
Go to the people, visit the urban low cost housing communities and tenements. Hear what they say. Visit city hubs and count the number of beggers. Obtain a report on unemployment. I'm pretty sure there's no growth. Be realistic, only those at the top are getting richer while the bottom and middle class are living from paycheck to paycheck. Cost of living is skyrocketing. Those living on borrowings are enslaved to death. We are not living free anymore.
Govt must indicate how much debt is accumulated today. It's more than $1b if you add in what they had stolen from the FNPF together with unfixed infrastructure, cost of unemployments, rise in criminal activities, undeveloped and under developed living communities plus +.
By the way did the govt pay up the $250m. If so did they settle both the principal and interest?

Pita is a product of the urban&modern Fiji, his lifestyle is far away from that of your average villager. There is apparently a SHAME in living in the countryside. One is supposed to be dumb, idiot, backward to live there and earn a living. Top it up with church and some time-consuming traditions, and you have all the best arguments to get out of there as soon as you can.
Now Konrote talks about bloody cassava, the worst root crop, even toxic to some extend. The way he puts it is quite rough, though he is right! There is much better money to be made in the countryside than in the city, especially if you are uneducated, People keep saying they go to city for education, but look at the drop out rates...and the achievement at school! Now universities have to lower the admission to 50% marks... that's crazy! so why are the uneducated/unsuccesful youth not going back to the villages? because the cultural environment is considered as backward and also because a lot of youths are quite happy begging and having a little beer every now and then in Suva! That's a problem of social perception.
The solution to economic problems is through VALORIZATION of a new kind of lifesyle in the village. Religion is now out, Cassava is out, demanding cultural obligations are partly out. Planting sandalwood, high value crops and nice handmade products is IN. We need a RURAL space that is interesting for the youths! For goodness sake, this is FIJI!!!! where else is supposed to be found a quality of life? Outsiders don't come to visit our cities generally... We need tiny towns in the countryside where the lifestyle would be "urban" (no church and freedom) with rules about aesthetics (many villages look like dumps and are not well planned...people leave their houses falling apart, looks like ghost vilkages) A BEAUTIFUL, FREE and MODERN countryside. We need a concept of MODEL TINY TOWNS.
Making the countriside interesting is the key to the economic problems of Fiji. We are very far from that!
While this government debt is worrying we should be more worried about the debt in our local airline where government is the major shareholder...this bond is around USD200m. The Fiji Airways debt for those planes is around USD229m each, so all it roughly equates to USD687m.
We the tax payers do not know how this debt is affecting the airline's financials. While profit is one thing, cash flow effect is another story. Servicing a loan with that magnitude is a huge task. it's sad that loan details is sketchy at best, with the airlines full financials never posted on their website.
Important information on ownership is still in the wind, and the financials can help clear all the confusion....Opposition needs to demand for the financials be published for the sake of the real shareholders, us the tax payers...
