Fiji citizens put a fight to save flag

Growing resistance to plan to dump flag.

Irrelevant and riddled with colonialism.

That's Frank Bainimarama's reasoning for ditching the flag and unveiling a new one on Independence Day in October.

Bainimarama claims he can come up with a flag more relevant for the New Fiji.

"We need to replace the symbols on our existing flag that are out of date and no longer relevant, including some anchored to our colonial past.

"The new flag should reflect Fiji's position in the world today as a modern and truly independent nation state."

The goon has resorted to justifying his arbitrary decision by saying New Zealand's doing it so why not Fiji.

But hang on - New Zealand and other democratic countries hold a referendum when they want to change something as major as their flag, don't they?

That's right - the people of Fiji have not been consulted.

As the National Federation Party leader Biman Prasad says, there should be a referendum.

"An issue of national importance, especially when it involves an issue that has become an indelible part of our history, symbolizing transition from 96 years of Colonial Rule to full Independence 45 years ago, must involve the entire population of Fiji, including their elected representatives."

Bainimarama says there is no need for a referendum, he has spoken and that's it. He says the competition will run for two months and the voice of every Fijian will be heard.

Will be heard how? So now every Fijian is a designer, artist, and painter? And everyone's voice will be heard in two month. Bullcrap.

And, sorry, Bainimarama your changing the flag won't wash away Fiji's colonial past.

"When one looks at our institutions, names of our major roads and streets, they are named in honour of colonial rulers, administrators and monarchs," says Prasad. "Aren’t these remnants of Colonialism, if PM’s logic is given credibility?

"This government also still attaches our Indo-Fijian community to colonial history," he says.

"The preamble describes Indians as descendants of indentured labourers from British India. What nonsense!"

This is insulting. India was a British Colony, so was Fiji and many other countries under the rule of the British Empire.

Therefore, the preamble basically describes Indo-Fijians as British Indians!

Like all sugar coated snow jobs (remember the re-branding of Air Pacific to Fiji Airways and the theft of?), the regime has organised a national competition to find a winning design.

Beware this PR exercise because it'll be riddled with agendas - remember what they did with the Constitution.

If you want to save the flag, sign the petition here

And this Red Poppies business and carry on every year would now also qualify as a relic of the Colonial past too wouldn't it ?

After all we did get it from the British as a tradition.

Colonial relic of the past ?.....

Trooping of the colour to mark day

Timoci Vula
Friday, October 07, 2011
Fiji Times

CLOSE to 400 members of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will perform the trooping of the colour when Fiji celebrates its 41st year of independence today.

It has been confirmed that the parade will comprise 396 men where there will be a six by 66 men detachment followed by the RFMF band. Military and naval officers have been rehearsing at Suva's Albert Park this week.

Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni said the trooping of the colour was a military tradition that the RFMF had fostered tracing its origin back to when the country was ceded to the British Empire.

"This is a ceremony performed by regiments of the British and the Commonwealth armies.

"It has been a tradition of infantry regiments since the 17th century, although the roots go back much earlier," Lt-Col Leweni said.

The RFMF should be disbanded immediately. It's a relic of the past passed down to us from British colonial days.

The reasoning behind B's desire to change the flag is to rid Fiji of reminders of its colonial past.

If that's the case, don't stop with the flag. Dismantle parliament (since we inherited it from the Brits). Change all the names of our roads that bear the names of governors during Colonial days. Change the name of the Army barracks, change the name of QE drive. Why start and stop with the flag? Go the full nine yards.

Funny Timocoi Vula's post RFMF and many others on this site. We let go of the R and left with FMF now. The R Rabuka took away. Time to move on... British Flag and history must go. Fiji history must be taught in schools so students can learn about themselves, their rich heritage and history, unlike the many Itaukei today who unfortunately were only taught British history and are trapped and confused with the difference between Religion and tradition melting the two into one. Perhaps that's why we have too many lotu in Fiji.

And why do we need the Sergeant at Arms to carry the iTutuvi Kuta I Radini Bau into Parliament every morning ?

Its a Colonial relic of the past isn't it ?

Its a relic of our Colonial past and is what happens at Westminister where the Sergeant at Arms carries the Mace into the House of Commons and places it on the Woolsack behind the Lord Speaker when the House is in session.

Speaking of which why is the Speaker of the House robed and wearing the full bottomed wig ?

These are all relics of the British colonial past !

And whats all this business about Brigadier Generals and Major Generals and Rear Admirals being Gazetted ?

Aren't those relics of the Colonial past ?

Those are British Officer appointments

And why do we want to make the Navy the Senior Service as they do in the UK ?

That's a British relic as well !

Nelson at Trafalgar ?

England expects ?

That's all British.

Cometh the hour come the the man ?

Even the ABC our toddlers start learning at Class 1 is English.

Why do we keep them if they are all now relics of the colonial past ?

And whats all this business about using phrases like " where's the picket" still going on at "Queen Elizabeth Barracks"

Those are all relics of our colonial past.

Why call the Guard at the Presidents House on "picket duty"
and calling the camp the "Queen Elizabeth Barracks" ?

The top Chinese party Communist officials send their children to British prep schools and Oxbridge

Its gone to the stage where they have even asked British prep schools to set up replica's in China eg replica Eaton, Harrow etc etc etc

Singapore's whole educational system is based on the Cambridge International model.

The Arab Princes and Kings send their children to British prep schools and Universities

And they all do their classy shopping in London

Even the Russian Oligarchs.

Saville Row, Harrods etc etc etc.

If its all a relic of the colonial past for us now, then how come its all class to the rest of the world ?

Doesn't make sens.

Caltech, Oxford and Harvard lead world university rankings

UK takes 11 of the Top 100 places in Times Higher Education survey

Wednesday 2 October 2013 22.07 BST

Oxford and Cambridge retained their positions as two of the world's leading universities but some of their British rivals saw their rankings slip in the latest international league table of higher education institutions.

The Times Higher Education world university rankings for 2013-14 ties Oxford and Harvard for second place overall, just behind table-topping Caltech, while its perennial rival Cambridge sits in seventh place.

Stanford University was fourth and MIT was fifth, with US universities making up seven of the top 10.

Dr Wendy Piatt, director of the Russell Group of leading UK research universities, said that the UK's higher education sector still outperformed the majority of its competitors, with 11 universities in the top 100. "But investment in the UK still lags far behind the US, China and many other western European countries. And the global race is hotting up, with many Asian universities continuing to climb up the rankings," she said.

@12.47PM Absolutely pathetic, you don't even know what your talking about its just plain display of ignorance and your admiration of the Nazism ideology. To say "Putin is following Bainimarama" and "National socialism is the wave of the future"
pretty much sums up your level of stupidity.

The Red army showed no mercy to the 3rd Reich and the national socialist workers party (nazi party) during the battle of Berlin. The fascist citizens of Nazi germany received ruthless treatment (An act of vengeance) from the Soviet Union soldiers right from the minute they fought back from stalingrad.Perhaps you should grab your passport fly to Eastern Ukraine to a city called Donetsk.Pay a visit to the Pro-Russian militias voicing your views of how national socialism is the way and future and your ridiculous assumption of Mr Putin following Bainimarama. They would hang you and gutt you open like heck cattle with your fascist views.

And close the British High Comm since it's a direct and constant reminder of our colonial masters. The EU office can take up issuing visa's for the UK.

The Military will take up the challenge of designing the new flag...seems to me it's a foregone conclusion. There's a new flag design already in place. Someone from the Military will "win" this comp and voila! Fiji has a new flag. I REFUSE TO FLY THE NEW FLAG OR HONOUR IT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM.

FEA already has a new flag. Go and pay your bill and see their new flag hanging there--must be from the CEO.

A young Fiji national who failed to win status as a refugee has won the right to stay in New Zealand permanently, partly because she is Muslim.

The 30-year-old Fiji Indian, whose name has not been released, failed to win her case before the Refugee Status Branch but succeeded at the Immigration and Protection Tribunal (IPT).

She has lived in New Zealand since 2009 but does not want to return to Fiji fearing sexual violence which she has experienced in the past there.

She felt that her relatives in Fiji would force her to marry to protect her from further violence and to avoid the stigma of living alone, which her religion opposed.

The Refugee Branch said she had been the victim of sexual harassment and assault at the hands of a Fijian man in 2008.

It found there "was no real chance that she would suffer any sexual violence if returned to Fiji, and considered that the state would be able to protect her from serious harm".

It also found there was no evidence she would be forced to marry.

By law Refugee Status decisions have to be reviewed by IPT and in its decision it said the woman had been on visitor, student and job visas since 2009.

It said all her family now live in New Zealand where she also receives psychiatric care as a result of the assault in Fiji in 2008.

"As a backdrop to the appeal, there are the country information reports tendered in support of the appellant's refugee and protection claim, including reports on the high incidence of sexual violence in Fiji; criticisms of the police force and its ability to protect women from violence in Fiji; and the patriarchal nature of Sunni Islam," the IPT decision says.

Her grandparents submitted they would be distressed to see the woman sent back to Fiji.

"They consider it an unsafe place for single young females," the tribunal said.

"For the combined reasons of her family nexus to New Zealand and vulnerability, the tribunal finds that the appellant has exceptional humanitarian circumstances and it would be unduly harsh to require her to return to Fiji now when she particularly needs the emotional support and care of her family."

So all you guys missed the Circus in Parliament this morning or what?? LOL

Frank Bainimarama's (no school) idiocy and plain stupidity was to the fore where he proudly boasted about being the Instigator of the 2006 Coup and the rest of it. Wooohoooo...ONLY IN FIJI and mind you HE BEING THE PRIME MINISTER????

Just shows how the rest of Fiji First Supporters are mentally retarded to have chosen this clown to be the Prime Minister of Fiji!!

Now we understand why Vili Rakoro and Tui Viti are the biggest dumbass donkies on Coup 4.5!

SO SHAMEFUL!! HOW DEGRADING!! WHAT A BIG SHOCKING EMBARRASSMENT TO FRANK'S SUPPORTERS!! THIS WILL SURELY GO VIRAL, WORLDWIDE!! HE HE HE

Whaaat? Frank openly boasting about his responsibility for the 2006 coup? What a shock this will be for Vili Rakoro. Up to now, he's claimed that was just an unproven allegation.

Instead of getting rid of the flag and other "relics of our colonial past", wouldn't it be better to just get rid of Bainimarama? After all, constitutional despotism is a throwback to Cromwell. That's been passé since 1688.

Guys, be warned of friendly former police or soldiers come warming up to you on bread and butter issues. These gather information for the BaiPool,anything/ issues from work, home, church, streets, schools committee,supermarket,market/especially grog places....they gather bits of info....which can be used against the same person.Scary but you are warned, that you are being watched, listened, read and even spied upon.Tragedy of a complicated 'illiberal democracy'.I had been called to a meeting this morning by this former soldier and in the meeting, he was nowhere to be found.Suspicious things happening.

February 5. You said you're dump. Yes you are. The Indians deserve a place in the Fiji society. They have contributed a lot to develop our capital city and urban towns. If it wasn't for the Fiji Indians, Fiji would be just like Somalia. Everyone wants the Current flag retained
