Captured troops radioed for help, soldiers names released

Al Nusra: Stolen UN vehicles.

Fiji's rash pursuit of friends has come back to bite it on the bum.

Intel sources claim the captured Fiji troops radioed Israel for help but were turned away because of Fiji's decision to cement diplomatic ties with Iran (and North Korea) in 2012.

Sources say the captured men sought help from Israel but were told no cavalry would be coming because Fiji soldiers no longer had preferential treatment.

Negotiations are meanwhile underway for the release of the captured soldiers but it's not certain who is doing the talking to the radical Islamic group, Al Nusra.

Media reports suggest Fiji is leading the negotiations but
nothing has been confirmed with RFMF commander, Mosese Tikoitoga, reiterating only that they've had no contact with the men but are trying to get them released.

Tikoitoga has also revealed Fiji is training more men to send as replacements for the captured troops.

The decision is an unpopular one and has sparked more criticism of the RFMF, especially Tikoitoga who earlier this week broke protocol by revealing the commanding officer had weighed up his options and decided to act as a 'cat' rather than a 'tiger'

The commander is believed to be Savenaca Siwatabu.

Al Nusra says in its statement it took the 45 troops because "UNDOF was aiding the government of President Bashar al-Assad and had ignored the suffering of the Syrian people."

It says it will release the men in exchange for humanitarian aid for Syria saying the 'detainees are in a safe place, and in a healthy condition."

Frank Bainimarama, who sent more than 400 men to Golan Heights last year knowing the mission was dangerous, has broken his silence to deny the troops were 'combatants' following wide criticism of the troop's decision to surrender, unlike the soldiers from the Phillipines who stood their ground.

Pictures of Bainimarama campaigning hard out in the past five days as he distanced himself from the capture have done him no favours. They show him to be cold and calculating and  not man enough to take responsibility for sending Fiji to war. Bainimarama only made a nationwide speech on the captured men yesterday, four days after the soldiers were taken prisoners.

Also unpalatable these past few days were pictures of Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum playing up for the cameras on a Fiji First Fun Day in Nausori, a day after the men were captured.

Playing to the gallery: Khaiyum throwing lollies at the Fiji First Fun Day
Both will no doubt try to wash their hands of the fate of the 45 troops as they forge ahead with their charade of an election to maintain their illegal reign.

Al-Jazeera now listing Al Nusrah's demands.

There's no way we will bow to the terrorist demands. No way! If we must, better to sacrifice a few of our troops than the man who is leading Fiji forward!

Syrian Rebels Threaten Beheadings, List Demands
UN troops held in Golan 'for own protection'
Last updated: 2 Sept 2014 03:17

LISTEN

The UN says it has been told by al-Qaeda linked rebels that 45 seized Fijian peacekeepers in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights "could lose their heads" if the UN and Fiji did not soon meet their list of demands.

That list is reported to include the release of an al-Qaeda leader held prisoner in Syria since 2005 and the immediate resignation of Fiji's unelected prime minister. Other demands reportedly include the provision of humanitarian supplies to rebel-held positions, compensation for three slain rebels, delisting as a terrorist organisation, and the creation of a UN-administered "humanitarian corridor" in Southern Syria.

The Fijians, who are part of the UN's disengagement observer force, were seized on Thursday by rebels the US said were lead by members of the Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's primary affiliate in Syria. The Nusra Front rebels are allied with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, which recently beheaded American photojournalist James Foley.

The rebels had earlier said that they had removed the peacekeepers from the Quneitra crossing area in which they were first captured "for their own protection" and that they were all safe. Then, on Friday, the UN said it had "received assurances from credible sources that the 44 peacekeepers ... are safe and in good health", adding that the disengagement mission was informed "that the intention ... was to remove them from an active battlefield to a safe area for their own protection". The number of Fijian troops is now believed to number 45.

The UN added that 72 soldiers from the Philippines had been surrounded by rebels but had not been harmed and were in good health.

The prime minister of Fiji is Voreqe Bainimarama, who, as commander of Fiji's military forces, seized power from Fiji's elected government in a bloodless coup in 2006. He has ruled Fiji in an autocratic manner since then but permitted elections for 17 September that are widely seen as a referendum on his rule.

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for the UN operation, said talks were continuing with a "wide range of parties within Syria" including UN member states.

"Those who are being held have food and water for some time," he said. "At this very point, it is not an extreme concern."

The capture and standoff come after Syrian rebels, including Nusra Front fighters, stormed the Quneitra crossing on Wednesday, sparking an exchange of fire with Israeli troops.

The Golan Heights is a strategic plateau captured by Israel in a 1967 Middle East war.

Syria and Israel technically remain at war. Syrian troops are not allowed in an "area of separation" under a 1973 ceasefire formalised in 1974.

The UN force monitors the area of separation, a narrow strip of land running about 70km from Mount Hermon on the Lebanese border to the Yarmouk River frontier with Jordan.

It comprises 1,223 soldiers from Fiji, India, Ireland, Nepal, Netherlands and the Philippines.

Austria, Japan and Croatia have all pulled their troops out of the monitoring force due to the deteriorating security situation and spillover from the Syrian war.

UN officials noted that troops monitoring the area have been abducted twice in the last year, but released safely.

ISIS BEHEADS SECOND AMERICAN JOURNALIST ..LATEST!!

The Islamic militant group ISIS cut off the head of an American journalist in a video made public Tuesday — following through on a threat it made when it beheaded another American two weeks ago and vowed to keep killing unless the United States stopped airstrikes.

The journalist, Steven Joel Sotloff, was beheaded in a video made public by SITE Intel Group, which monitors jihadist organizations. The video surfaced days after Sotloff’s mother pleaded with the leader of ISIS for mercy.

ISIS beheaded another American journalist, James Foley, in a video released Aug. 19 and threatened to kill Sotloff unless President Barack Obama ended the airstrikes, which have pummeled ISIS targets in Iraq for four weeks.

Sotloff, 31, wrote about conflict in the Middle East for Time magazine and other publications. He grew up in Miami and attended the University of Central Florida in the early 2000s. He disappeared in August 2013 in Syria.

A family spokesman told NBC News that Sotloff’s relatives were aware of the video, and that while they were waiting for it to be verified, they were grieving.

The video, titled “A Second Message to America,” opens with a clip of President Barack Obama speaking after ISIS beheaded Foley last month. Obama vowed in those remarks to be relentless when Americans are harmed.

The video then shows Sotloff, wearing an orange jump suit and kneeling, in a sparse desert landscape, next to a black-clad ISIS fighter — a replica of the conditions in the video in which Foley was beheaded.

Speaking to the camera, Sotloff faults Obama for U.S. intervention in the Middle East. The ISIS fighter then blames Obama for refusing to heed ISIS’s warnings and end military strikes. The video threatens the life of a British captive, David Cawthorne Haines.

“It is an absolutely disgusting and despicable act,” Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain said, according to the Press Association news agency.

The White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, said that he could not confirm the authenticity of the Sotloff video. He said that the United States had devoted significant time and resources to rescuing Sotloff. The CIA and State Department also said that they could not confirm authenticity.

“If the video is genuine, we are sickened by this brutal act,” said Jen Psaki, a State Department spokeswoman.

ISIS itself did not appear to have released the video yet. Its media wing posted a notification saying that a second message to the United States was “coming soon.”

Last week, Sotloff’s mother, Shirley, pleaded with the leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, to spare her son. She addressed him by his preferred title, caliph of the Islamic State.

“We have not seen Steven for over a year, and we miss him very much,” she said. “We want to see him home safe and sound and to hug him.”

The Committee to Protect Journalists said it condemned the “pure barbarism” in the strongest possible terms.

Sotloff, like Foley, “went to Syria to tell a story,” said Joel Simon, the executive director of CPJ. “They were civilians, not representatives of any government. Their murders are war crimes and those who committed them must be brought to justice swiftly.”

CNN NEWS UPDATE said...

(CNN) — The ISIS terror group has published a video titled “A second message to America,” showing the beheading of American journalist Steven Sotloff.

The video also threatens the life of British captive David Haines.

Sotloff speaks to the camera before he is killed, saying he is “paying the price” for U.S. intervention. Considering he was a captive, it’s possible that his words were scripted for him.

The masked ISIS figure in the video speaks to U.S. President Barack Obama, telling him, “Just as your missiles continue to strike our people, our knife will continue to strike the necks of your people.”

They should now start preparing the families for the worst.

The UN can't get Syria to agree to a humanitarian zone around Damascus.

The UN Security Council cannot increase the mandate of UNDOF to create safe haven

UN troops have now killed 3 al Nusra and done so with back up from Israel and the US and Syria.

That is the state of play.

Al Nusra has no choice but to execute the hostages to show that they are not a weak counterpart to ISIS.

This is also about propaganda recruitment value within the Jihadi movement.

The method of execution will most probably be beheading to get maximum propaganda recruitment value.

This is now about the reputation of al Nusra within the Jihadi world.

For al Nusra it now comes down to a simple issue: If ISIS can behead then we can behead as well, and we are beheading UN troops who are supported by the US and Israel and Syria and Iran.

We are not weak.

Anonymous said...

They've stated their intent.

It will be by way of beheadings

The families should be prepared for this worst case scenario now.

It is now a real possibility.

The UN is helpless. It cannot meet their demands.

For everything there is a time and a purpose. The physical is visible and easier to notice, observe, analyse, consider, understand and respond to. Abstract and invisible actions and events are more difficult to see and understand.

Now what does this capture of our soldiers mean to us in the deeper sense. What lessons can we learn from this? Is there something that God is trying to tell us? Of course, the answers to the above a quite many, depending on your standpoint. But let me offer a possible view.

The Islamic rebels believe in what they are doing and are prepared to fight and die for their faith and goals.

The Islamic rebels have captures our soldiers who have done the no wrong and their lives are in the hands of the Islamic fighters.

Khaiyum belongs to the Islamic faith. he is as passionate and zealous to the Islamic cause as those of his brothers in Syria and the Golan.

Khaiyum and his close circle of plotters, have used our military to take the whole nation hostage and have helped us captive for more than seven long years.

To rescue our sons and brother soldiers held captive in Syria, we still have the UN and other Governments working to secure their release. Here in Fiji, we have no one but ourselves. No one is willing to help us unless we take the first step to secure our rights, freedom and normality.

Through our captured soldiers, God may be opening our eyes to see what has been happening to us all these years. Khaiyum must be held accountable. He has held us captive with his retarded partner Vorere Maramanibai. They must be held accountable.

We must ACT NOW to secure our freedom. We cannot do much for our soldiers because we cannot reach them, but only through prayer. But here, right here at home, we have Khaiyum and Marama very reachable. We must seize them, anywhere we can, hold them in prison and het a proper court to hear the people's case. We must also consider bringing back the hangman. Should the court find them guilty of capital crimes, their judgement must serve as the DETERRENT for any other soldier, rebel, terrorist and criminal retard, never to hold our Government or nation captive ever again. Vinaka

Gen 4:
8. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?

10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

Cain bore the punishment for murdering his brother for the rest of his life.

The blood of our brothers/fathers/uncles slain by the Security Forces in Fiji cry out for justice.Justice has not been meted out to the perpetrators until now.

They are asking us to pray for the 45. Did they ask us to pray for their victims such as Rabaka, the CRW soldiers and the rest?

ISAIAH 9:8-21 Those are ripening apace for ruin, whose hearts are unhumbled under humbling providences. For that which God designs, in smiting us, is, to turn us to himself; and if this point be not gained by lesser judgments, greater may be expected. The leaders of the people misled them. We have reason to be afraid of those that speak well of us, when we do ill. Wickedness was universal, all were infected with it. They shall be in trouble, and see no way out; and when men's ways displease the Lord, he makes even their friends to be at war with them. God would take away those they thought to have help from. Their rulers were the head. Their false prophets were the tail and the rush, the most despicable. In these civil contests, men preyed on near relations who were as their own flesh. The people turn not to Him who smites them, therefore he continues to smite: for when God judges, he will overcome; and the proudest, stoutest sinner shall either bend or break.

A safe haven in southern Syria would require the agreement of Damascus as well as a mandate being passed by the UN to create a mission to support the securing of that safe haven

It is impossible for Syria to agree to such a safe haven. That would effectively mean surrendering territory and right to territorial sovereignty.

Releasing the Spanish (he is a top ranking al Qaeda strategist who was held at Guantanemo before the Yanks released him to Syria in 2006/ 2007) is going to be out of the question for Syria.

He is one of the top strategists of al Qaeda and a very experienced warrior having fought in Afghanistan way back in the 1980's and rose through the ranks of the Mujahideen before switching to al Qaeda.

The last thing Damascus needs are experienced warriors free within Syria to organise al Nusra and strengthen it

There were two visions by two Pastors which had been published on the internet in 2007 or 2008 (I can't remember exactly) but if you can find them Coup Four Point Five and publish them that would be great.

One was an Australian Pastor I think his name was Penny or something ?

And the other was by a Fijian Pastor

The Fijian Pastor had basically said that in his vision he saw Driti stepping forward to speak but that his mouth was shut. The he saw graves on the parade ground at QEB.

Penny had said that in his vision there was a massive black cloud all over Fiji and that people came together and cried out to God.

It feels eerily like this visions were true. At that time I discounted them as mumbo jumbo nuts.

But from whats been unfolding over the last few days its really surreal. Those visions look like they were inspired.

Its not sensible to mislead the families and the people of Fiji.

The problem is that the PM's office gave directive that only good news be released i.e that the prisoners are being fed and looked after.

That's not sensible.

The families and the people should be informed of the situation in real terms so that its known what the true situation is, not fed feel good propaganda.

Hey Fiji you call yourself Christians...I call you hypocrites. My Fijian friend interpreted your Fijian blogs and the abuse and swearing is incredible. I have never heard such swear words uttered especially to Mothers who are special and gave birth to every one of you commenting on this blog site. The mothers are ones who always suffer in silence due to the sheer stupidity of men. In one sentence you swear and curse and in the next sentence you speak of God. There is a problem in Fiji and it is called hatred. Stop hating and show some humility. Some of you think your so well versed with the bible that reading your so called preaching, one realises how disillusioned you are. You guys need to have some pride. Both sides of the fence are throwing around so much disgusting words, disrespectful and illustrative of fearful individuals who are gutless. No one even feels sorry for you when we read your disgusting words. Your soldiers are captured and you all call for their heads to be chopped off. What kind of people are you. You want to take out your PM, take him out. Do you have the guts to do that. Many other countries in the world including mine Tonga we stand up for our rights and fight never surrender. You guys need to go back tribal because you guys have lost your warrior blood. Too much lotu you gone nuts. You all bloody cowards like your soldiers who surrendered. Kefei...

Check out this link from the Morning Mail 3/9/14

Here is one quote:

It is to be wondered what the families of the captured Fijians have to say about the Brigadier’s attitude of plenty more where they came from expendability toward peacekeepers?

Here is another:

Money to be made in peacekeeping

The money made in peacekeeping is seen as one key reason for the Pacific nation’s involvement.

The Australian National University’s Jon Fraenkel and Stewart Firth estimate Fijians brought home $322 million in their first 30 years of service with the UN.

Some research even suggests total remittances from Fijians working overseas has become more valuable to Fiji than traditional sectors like sugar and manufacturing.

In the last financial year, the UN spent nearly $8.6 billion on peacekeeping operations.

Each UN member contributes to this budget, with the US, Japan and France the biggest donors.

The UN then reimburses countries that are volunteering peacekeepers at a rate of just over $1,000 per troop per month.

Fiji currently has 734 personnel on UN peacekeeping missions, of which the majority are troops.

In a country where the gross national income is only $4,765 per person, more than $1,000 per troop every month is seen as good money.

It is no surprise, therefore, that Nepal and Bangladesh are among other key contributors of troops to UN peacekeeping missions.

And what is the Military Chief's attitude towards the captured troops:

We will send replacements. Plenty more where they came from. We want our money.

Stand toe to toe was one thing a joint operations with other armies have taught us. Once Australia/NZ/US was out then we have the Chinese to teach us their fighting tenchiques.

SURRENDERING IS WHAT WE GET WHEN WE LEARN FROM CHEAP WAR TACTICS COUNTRIES LIKE CHINA WHO ARE DEPENDENT ON TECHNOLOGY MORE THEN REAL COMBAT WARFARE.

We used to be known worldwide as one the best jungle warfare nation. Where is it now?

No combat but dependent on weapons and technology. Without them we are cowards and surrender like they did. Look at the Filipino. Its time we do a joint combat with the Filipino and not China as Bai and Teleni has done.

WRONG MINDSET AT THE WRONG TIME CAUSES THEM TO SURRENDER.

Never ever surrender in a war, you either die or win. Never ever surrender. Good of the Filipino for defying the UN call to surrender but chooses to fight. At the end they won their trophy which is their life.

Good old days when we use to learn the hard way from the Gurkah and New Zealand and Australian Army have gone. But we them back now.

Its also time for those overgrown old war training facilities in Fiji be revamped and reused. Some have now been turned into Museum because Bainimarama's soldiers have only learn to bully and not knowing how to fight.

But then again where do we get our free blank bullets to do our trainings.

Please Australia, New Zealand and US help us. Ooopps...not until after the election anyway.

Anonymous 10:44, if Fiji is a terrorist stae, it is because we have terrorists running the government here. How patriotic is it to support an illegal government? How patriotic is it to overthrow your own democratic government? How patriotic is it to muzzle your own citizens and to take away their constitution? As patriots, we cannot support traitors. It isn't patriotic to support our soldiers when they are traitors.

Fijian Peacekeepers 'Could Lose Heads' (AP)

Syrian rebels warned that their Fijian hostages "could lose their heads" unless their list of demands is met, including the new demand that Fiji's prime minister resign immediately from his position. The Fijian capital had no immediate response, except for a renewed call for prayer by Brig. Gen. Mosese Tikoitoga, Commander of Fij's military forces.

The Al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, which has been fighting the Syrian military near the Golan Heights, claimed responsibility for the seizure of the Fijian peacekeepers. Its list of demands has grown from an initial demand for humanitarian assistance, compensation, and a "humanitarian corridor" in the south of Syria to additional demands for the release of an Al-Qaeda leader held by Syria since 2005, an end to the organisation's terrorist designation, and the immediate resignation of Fiji's prime minister, who has ruled Fiji as dictator since 2006.

Nusra Front demands the release of Abu Mussab al-Suri, described by Professor Jerome Maloch, visiting fellow at Cambridge University's Centre for Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, as "a leading Al-Qaeda strategist and operative." Maloch characterised the rebel demand for the resignation of Fiji's prime minister as political theatre. "The rebels are effectively saying to the Fijians 'look, it's either your government or your soldiers. Decapitate one, or we'll decapitate the other.' This is an extraordinary ultimatum and intervention in the domestic affairs of another country."

Fijian Prime Minister Bainimarama had no immediate statement. Bainimarama seized power from Fiji's elected government in a military-led coup in 2006. Fiji is now just two weeks away from its first elections since the coup.

The commander of Fiji's armed forces, Brig. Gen. Tikoitoga, said only that the situation continued to be tense and asked for all Fijians to pray for a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

Bainimarama resign? No way! We should do one better. String him up!

Brilliant plan by Al-Nusra and Khaiyum. The Muslim Brotherhood can take over Fiji without firing a shot. At this point, I think a lot of soldiers would welcome it. Certainly the families of our men held prisoner in Syria would agree.

How long did the regime think it could keep the rebel demands a secret? Just because it can suppress the news in Fiji doesn't mean they can get away with it overseas.

"Around 200 people attended a prayer ceremony last night at the Fiji Sevashram Sangha in Bau street, Flagstaff to pray for the 45 Fijian peacekeepers who are currently held captive by the Al Nusra group in Syria.

Swami Sanyuktanand who led the prayer said Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum accepted their request and also prayed with everyone last night.

He said they will be having similar prayer ceremonies in the coming days for the Fijian peacekeepers at their 43 centres around the country and people from all faiths can take part in it.

Swami Sanyuktanand said this a national issue and everyone should get together and pray for those who are part of us and have gone in other countries to serve and do peacekeeping.

He said they praying to the almighty for an early return of all the Fijian troops."

In the almost 500 years of the Royal Green Jackets those colours have never fallen in all its operations.

And now its been surrendered by the RFMF to an Irregular militia in the Golan called al Nusra

Fiji Day is next month. What colour will be trooped at Albert Park ? The one surrendered to al Nusra ?

Anonymous said...

No regimental pride.

Were there regimental pride the processes for selection and vetting would have ensured that only those who are fit and ready to carry the 1st FIR's colours go on operations.

This is the problem when its no longer the First Fiji Infantry Regiment but the First Fiji Kila Vata Regiment.

At the very least Regimental tradition and pride (were there any) would have stopped the Top Brass at Nabua from sending inadequately prepared troops to carry the 1st FIR's colours.

But it didn't because it was probably just all about favours for the boys and money.

A number of Fijians in the British Army working in the Middle East had sought leave to try to locate and rescue the captured 45. Unconfirmed reports received from sources on the ground is that an undisclosed number of the captured had attempted to flee and were shot and killed. The captured had been separated and moved to various locations and the British Army feared any attempt to rescue the captured, will result in the killing of the others. If there is any rescue attempt, the operation has to be conducted in one singular hit. Sad day for Fiji

Anonymous said...

@ 3.18 Yes that true. SF British Army Fijian boys have set up a crew to go and look for those guys.

There are other Fijian boys from the area (PMC) trying to link in.

They have tried to use Jordon and Lebanon as staging posts for entry into Syria. But without logistics from anyone in that region it is very difficult. The Israeli's and the Jordanians and the Lebanese are not prepared to allow Black ops out of their territories.

But its very hard because those guys have been moved out of UNDOF's area and have been moved to other locations in Syria.

That's the latest word from that side.

Its also suspected that some of those guys have been killed in the last two days - but not yet confirmed.

Anonymous said...

Some of the crew have heavy experience in that region i.e Syria Iraq and Turkey but mainly in Northern Syria towards the Iraqi side not Southern Syria.

The dialects are a problem.

Its not easy. The idea is good but the execution, without any State support from a heavy player in that region, its impossible.

Anonymous said...

@VB is a bastard

Don't get your hopes up.

Under current conditions in Syria it is down right suicidal.

Logistics are a problem. Cannot use British Army gear or PMC gear.

A staging point is a problem. Need approval from Amman, Tel Aviv or Beirut.

Back up is a problem. Its only a few guys and 4 WD's over thousands of square kilometres of Southern Syria.

Mission Impossible.

That's why its not going to happen. After discussions is binned.

THE BIGGEST QUESTION OF ALL IS, CAN AND WILL THE UN/TIKOITOGA/BAINIMARAMA PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING DEMAND. IT SOUNDS IMPOSSIBLE ALREADY.

Can we all remember the sons of Fiji held captive in Syria? Each one of them is a mother's son. Most of them a brother to a brother, a father to a son and a son to a father. Like everyone writing in this blog, we all have a duty for each other and that is when a fellow human needs help, we act accordingly. They need our help in any way shape or form. The moral issue in this way must and should supersede every thing above all. We come from a civilised country and must act in a civilised way and with its morals. No right thinking person should glorify death for justice in a barbaric way. This extremists have been playing with our mind for so long, because they have a more spiritual drive with them. Spiritual can only be countered by spiritual ethics and this is through prayer and fasting. Let us all as a nation pray for a Godspeed release of our boys and bring them home.

We can’t compare Syria with other areas of peacekeeping operations: Fiji Military Commander

SUVA, 03 SEPTEMBER 2014 (FIJI LIVE) ------Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga says we cannot compare Syria with other areas of peacekeeping operations because they have different mentalities.

He made the comment when queried if the 45 Fijian soldiers who have been held hostage since last Thursday were new soldiers with no peacekeeping experience.

“There’s a mixture of old soldiers and new soldiers, in every peacekeeping missions we go to, we take new soldiers as well.”

“It is the first that’s happened to us and I’m sure people make comparisons to Lebanon, Iraq and to other areas that we have operated in but I must say that Syria is totally different from all those areas,” Tikoitoga said.

He said Lebanon had a different armed element grouping and mentality unlike Syria which is now very radical. “In Lebanon we don’t see anyone beheading people, but here you see armed elements beheading people wherever and whenever they want.”

“These Fijian soldiers watch armed elements behead people beside their gate; that would have weakened anybody with the right mind.”

“That’s the kind of situation we’re in so it’s hard to make comparisons.” Brig-Gen Tikoitoga said though this was the first for Fijian soldiers to experience this type of situation, the circumstances were totally different.

Meanwhile, Tikoitoga has ruled out withdrawal of Fijian troops from peacekeeping duties in the Golan Heights.

In fact he outlined plans to send over replacements to take over from soldiers in detention by Syrian rebels, Al Nusra.

The military has even begun the process of selecting officers to take over. “We remain fully committed; in fact we’ve started the selection of our soldiers to go and replace those that are now in captivity,” Brig-Gen Tikoitoga said.

Those in detention he says may need time off to recuperate. “I tell you there is no shortage of Fijians that wants to replace them.

“We are not reviewing our post, we’re staying in Golan Heights, the Filipino’s did not review their decision from the 27th onwards they made it quite clear before the 27th , months ago that they were withdrawing.

“It has got nothing to do with the situation that was a decision made from back home in the Philippines.

“What we’re going through is a normal military tactical period that we go through but it should not determine our participation or not in the UN,” he said….PACNEWS

Anyway the coat hanger is not new in war in the Middle East.

They did it in Oman with the Adoo way back in the 1960's and 1970's.

Mirbat, Oman 1972 ?

Sekonaia Takavesi and Labalaba ?

Remember that ?

They knew that beheading was all the rage with the Adoo and the next best thing in the Jebel since sliced bread and they kept long sharpened swords for precisely that purpose. Snip snip. Chop chop.

Didn't stop them from standing to did it ?

Philippines Military is now conducting a review of what happened on the weekend with a view to policy improvement and also for a comprehensive report to be put to the President of the Philippines regarding proposed reforms they think is necessary to improve their operational effectiveness.

Their CO at Position 68 is a Captain.

He made very solid decisions.

The decision to do that night time exfil was his, according to reports coming out of the Philippines, in consultation with his NCO's.

And it was run with Israeli SF.

Night Vision equipment is not normally part of the UNDOF kit, so it means that these guys used their jungle skills from the Philippines to walk that terrain in the dark.

35 guys going at pace and carrying all that gear in the dark on unfamiliar terrain and no one got lost is no mean feat

That they were not compromised is a feat in itself.

Total noise and light discipline for two hours through terrain they were trekking for the first time.

Their ammo was running low after that 7 hour fire fight and the next day they would have been a massacre had they remained.

They walked for two hours through savannah/ desert terrain with slopes and hills carrying all their weapons and comms without night vision equipment through al Nusra lines (and not a man was injured or lost) before linking up with another escort force to take them over the Israeli lines.

Mercy for the soldiers and pray for their safe return to Fiji. This is another stunt by khaiyum that soldiers to be taken captive and later on released by his negotiater brother Aziz who is now ready to leave for Golan Heights tomorrow who will become a masihah for Fiji people.Till today our soldiers have never been taken hostage so why now.The answer is simple to win votes for himself.Wake up people of Fiji. This is a real eye opener for all of us.God Bless Fiji....

That they were allowed to enter Israeli territory from the Syrian side and more so at night time simply means that the Israeli's were in contact with them all through out and would probably have been with them coming in.

Calling in the codes to the point of entry on the Israeli lines that they were the friendly forces coming in from the Syrian side and securing that clear entry into Israel.

That's the value of SF - these guys would have done pathfinder recon work in Mindanao and knew the drill for entering fr9iendly territory from the enemy side and all the rest of the night time ops fundamentals.

Made it easy for Israeli SF to
work with them.

Smooth.

That's also the value of supporting Israel and other democracies in the UN and other international forums, instead of making kissyface with the Iranians and other totalitarians.

Bloggers are saying what a disgrace this is for 1st FIR, and it is. But it still pales compared to the disgrace of 3rd FIR.

1FIR surrendered to an external enemy (Al Nusrah) without firing a shot, giving up our camp. But 3FIR not only surrendered to an internal enemy (Bainimarama and other traitors) without firing a shot, but it joined with them, giving up our entire country.

Aiyaz is pulling a disinformation campaign, trying to use the fiasco in Syria to his advantage. He's hoping to pressure the PM into resigning. Mr. PM, don't believe him. Arrest him while you still can. That will take the sting out of the current crisis and add greatly to your popularity just before the elections. You can always release him later, if you want (I wouldn't). Remind him who is boss here.

We heard initially that there were 43 of our men taken hostage, then we heard that there were 44, now it is 45.
How many people should have been in that location?, where did the other 2 come from if the capacity was 43?

It just seemed that our soldiers were dumped in a combat zone without proper firepower to face threats from ground attacks that they experienced.

Illegal PM was saying that they should not be taken hostage while in a peacekeeping zone. This is. Syria and not Sinai, nor Lebanon, 30 years later going into these missions with the same old firepower is unrealistic.
Philippinos fought back because that they had what it takes to resist, and that was the difference.

The Fiji army has to live up to the realities of modern times in combat zones.

First, let me share my grief with the families and friends of the soldiers in captivity. I do not agree with the coups that the RFMF carried out but that is another matter.
It is standard drills in all peacekeeping operations that when your position is threatened, you call "Stand To" and all soldiers run to their allocated gunpits or fighting positions which after 40 years of UNDOF, should be substantially safe. If threatened by armed elements out in the open or in soft skinned vehicles, Col Mate would say "Bring it on." The British army, Australian and NZ Army and RFMF consider a ratio of 3:1 to be the minimum for the attacking force.

Once in your fighting position caommanders allocate as target the enemy commanders and the weapons you consider most dangerous and you let them know that if they try anything, they will die for sure.

For every demand you reply that you will fight to keep your position. If they bring hostages and threaten to kill them, do not be swayed. This buys time for your superiors to reinforce you, rescue you or allow the UN to get other countries to help but you never surrender your position.

The Filipinos understand what I am saying because this is basic military sense. They applied it and now they are free.

Someone dropped the ball on this ocassion and we need to discuss this openly and there needs to be an Independent Court of Inquiry into this separate from the military Board of Inquiry to find out where the fault lay, in particular in the selection, training and promotion of officers for this act has tarnished the reputations of Fijian Fighting men of all generations and all armies. Sukanaivalu, Labalaba,Col George Mate and many others would be rolling over in their graves with shame if they knew this.
I pray our poor soldiers get home safely and rejoin their families. God bless Fiji and may the RFMF return to the principles, ethics and values that once made me proud to be an officer in it.

Some of you urge me to support our soldiers. A few of you even say it's unpatriotic of me if I don't. But the RFMF are traitors to Fiji. They're committing treason against our lawful government. I'll support the RFMF if you first can explain to me why it's an act of patriotism to support those who commit treason against Fiji.

The same Filipino soldiers were captured a year ago but surrendered. Since this is their last deployment in GH, they wanted to restore pride to their army. They have nothing to lose by fighting back.

Talking from experience, Arabs have long memories. You fight them today and you will have to fight everyday for the rest of your lives.

Swearing at Indians won't solve issue : Felix Anthony and nirmal singh want to go Back to their union positions . Fees has appointed an interim leader for his union . That should not be allowed . Same with. Nirmal . They should resign from their current posts . If they lose , then like any other citizen , they can go and apply for jobs .

Laying. Blame on Islam is not right . The religion is peaceful .. It's the barbaric bastards who kill in the name of religion. Understand , the 44 or so soldiers held captive .. Is not the fault of fiji Muslims ... Threatening to kill them .. Will only invite more bloodshed to a peaceful fiji ...when 911 happened .. Did Americans go n slaughter Muslims ( arguably they do in Iraq by bombing civilian areas etc. ) but at home .. They understood .. That the religion is not at fault . Go to Naboro prison : pick out every prisoner .. And ask them their religions? 90 per cent will be Christians or Methodists .. By that virtue ... I'm also a Christian .. Which means that I'm also guilty of a crime . As god fearing people ... You can never pass judgement with trial .. We cannot persecute another race or people of another faith. ... The ultimate judge sits above us .. And has the power of judgement not us .. What we can do is pray and live peacefully . By attacking fiji Muslims ... Who are very very very peaceful we are isolating them .., and ultimately isolating ourselves from a multicultural society ... If we the Fijians feel that no other race should be in Fiji except us .. Or by getting rid of a faith ... Then we need a reality check .if we do that then we are no different from barbaric terrorists ... .. God bless fiji and our soldiers

If you see a thief in your house, in the midst of his stealing, It is silly to be praying for him.
God expects you to kick out the farking thief out of the house.

BAINIMARAMA IS THE BIG THIEF IN THE HOUSE!

SO WHAT DOES GOD EXPECT YOU TO DO NOW?????
YES , KICK HIM OUT!

If it's true that the 44 RFMF Soldiers taken hostage in the Golan Heights will be tried under Sharia Law, then one can only assume that Fiji is headed the same way under its pretend Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum.
