PDP promises to up Fiji's $2 mimimum wage

The Peoples Democratic Party has opened its national office
Office fanfare: PDP officials yesterday.
in Suva pledging to lift the minimum wage for workers if elected in September.

PDP leader Felix Anthony yesterday said the $2 hour minimum wage is a crime.

"No one can live with those wages and it is a step backwards for the country."

The party's new office is in Gordon Street and the opening was marked by cake and a rallying for support.

Anthony said PDP stands to ensure the rights and freedom of people are restored and the party would give back to the people of Fiji their dignity and respect.

"When we talk about rights, we also talk about indigenous rights, children's rights and people's rights."

He said the party would ensure a 'just minimum wage' was paid to all workers but didn't how say much more it would be.

The $2 minimum wage was criticised recently by PDP member and president of the Fiji Trade Union Congress, Daniel Urai, during a meeting with the International Labour Organisation director general, Guy Ryder.

Urai told Ryder the illegal government had last year imposed the minimum wage without consulting its social partners.

"A pittance one American dollar an hour is the rate they have decided, hardly sufficient to provide a decent living wage. In comparison Pacific island neighbours like Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and the Cook Islands pay a more respectable minimum wage which was achieved through tripartite consultation.

“The low minimum wage is argued by the Regime to attract investors and bring about better economic growth. The reality is quite the opposite.

"The low minimum wage only encourages employers who were paying more to reduce the rate of pay for their employees and argue that they are complying with minimum wage standards."

URAI: Speech to ILO.
The illegal Labour Minister, Jone Usamate (and Employers representative, Harvey Probert) was also at the Geneva meeting and had told Ryder Fiji was committed to the 'principles of decent and productive work.'

But Urai said the regime had not only forged ahead with the repressive Essential Industries Decree, but had extended the provisions to cover more workers, threatening also to include sugar and tourism workers.

He also told the ILO the inequities of the judicial system continued to be a fundamental problem.

"Everyone is equal under the law but this does not apply in Fiji where there is no confidence on the rule of law. Those who side with the Regime are protected by the non-application of the same law that would imprison others. Official complaints against the regime are quietly filed away by Police who deny receiving them with no action taken.

“Under the Political Parties decree, persons holding office in any Workers or Employers Organisation are banned from membership or office bearers in any political Party or any political activity including expressing support of a political Party. Heavy fines or imprisonment of up to five years or both is imposed on any Trade Union Leader or worker who breach the decree.

"On the other hand the Prime Minister and his Minister can become members of the PM’s political Party and openly campaign for the PM’s Party while they carry out their Ministerial duties.

"They hold office in the PM’s political Party. They will hold on to their Ministerial portfolio and continue to receive their salary up to and after the date of election."

Urai said Fiji is at the crossroads with the upcoming elections.

"The regime openly mocks the people by appointing a young and inexperienced lawyer to be the Supervisor of elections reporting directly to the Attorney General who is also the Minister for elections.

"The electoral decree (Decree11,2014) provides immunity provisions for the elections office staff, from any criminal and civil proceedings. This means that if there were any directive given to rig the elections than those found involved cannot be brought to any court of law.

"Many are convinced that the election will not be free and fair for the regime defies all sense of fairness and decency."

An ILO contacts mission is expected to visit Fiji shortly after the September 17 elections.

These accusations against Anthony and Singh -- I don't know if there's any truth to them. But in any case they positively pale by comparison to the thieving and other crimes committed by the current regime.

WE NEED MEN OF PRINCIPLE IN THIS ELECTION.

BUT IT IS IMPORTANT FOR LEADERS OR WOULD BE LEADERS OR THOSE THAT HAVE USURPED LEADERSHIP POSITION THROUGH THE BARREL OF THE GUN TO BE HONEST WITH THEMSELVES AND STEP DOWN IF THEY DO NOT FULFILL THE BASIC LEADERSHIP SKILLS SUCH AS,'
1.HONESTY
2.RESPECT TYE RULE OF LAW
3.RESPECT PEOPLE
4.DO NOT LIE IN PUBLIC
5.STAND FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE
6.CONDEMN CORRUPTION
7.BE TRANSPARENT
8.RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE'S CULTURE
9.DISPLAY CHARACTERS THAT CAN BE ROLE MODEL FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE THESE CHARACTERS IN THIS REGIME.

THESE PEOPLE ARE JUST BUNCH OF CORRUPT AND EVEN FOR THOSE THAT WERE DECENT AND GOOD PEOPLE LIKE SERUIRATU AND USUMATE HAVE TAINTED THEIR REPUTATION.

Tikoitoga's warning against changing the 2013 "Constitution" is just a parroting of Bainimama's earlier warning. But from a certain perspective, this is actually a hopeful sign. On the one hand, Bainimarama's warning seems to indicate that he understands his days are numbered. On the other hand, Tikoitoga's warning seems to indicate that the RFMF is contemplating the possibility of Fiji's governance by someone other than the pack of traitors leading Fiji First.

This is rather curious, considering that the Fiji Sun claims its polling shows that Bainimarama will win upwards of 80 percent of the vote. Don't Bainimarama and the RFMF believe the FS polls?

Of course they don't. Nobody does.

Now, just for the sake of argument, let us suppose for a moment that the coming elections were free and fair and that the RFMF actually allowed an opposition party to take office. With Bainimarama and Tikoitoga all the while making threatening noises from the sidelines, the new government would need to struggle hard to clean up Bainimarama's mess. Virtually every proposed change of policy would have to pass an RFMF litmus test, even regarding issues about which the 2013 "Constitution" is silent. Personnel issues would be especially sensitive. Every attempt to replace RFMF officers embedded in our demoralised civil service would spark a fresh crisis.

Inevitably the new government in Suva would turn to Canberra and other governments for support in freeing itself from the RFMF's dicatorial control. Of course, any effort to end RFMF control would be an existential threat to the traitors now in command. And, having come thus far through conspiracy, sedition, treason, torture, murder and plunder, Bainimarama isn't going to give up his ill-gotten power easily. It's the only thing separating him from prison and probably the noose.

So, Tikoitoga's warning is a hopeful sign, but we shouldn't misconstrue it as implying that the RFMF leadership is seriously considering life beyond Bainimarama. Nor did Bainimarama's warning really mean that he would relinquish power as long as the new government observes the 2013 "Constitution". Bainimarama cannot allow the sitting of any government that doesn't answer personally to him, because that is his only safety.

Why, then, give the warning at all? If Bainimarama believed the polls or had complete faith in Khaiyum's being able to fix the election in his favour, he shouldn't have felt the need. So, the warning betrays not only a lack of faith in the FS polls but a distrust of Khaiyum's criminal abilities. This is understandable, as this would be Khaiyum's first time to fix a national election, and he has blundered on other issues before.

I believe the warning is both an expression of anxiety and a marker. Bainimarama is anxious about Khaiyum's ability to deliver an election victory in the face of internal polling that consistently shows SODELPA would handily beat him in a free and fair election. He's laying down a marker now for further political intervention in the unlikely event that Khaiyum's machinations should fail. That intervention would come early on, if not immediately after the elections, in the event of his defeat.

Pretending that his illegal edicts are as immutable as the Law of the Medes isn't just this arrogant usurper's ultimate conceit as Fiji's "lawgiver", but a presupposition he wants us all to accept in order to justify his next cynical act of betrayal, should this election farce fail to give him the absolute unaccountability and monopoly on power for which Khaiyum designed it.

Bainimarama’s idiotic support for Indon President coming unstuck…………..Bainimarama does not appreciate the human tortures, crimes against humanity Indonesia is committing against the West Papuans…..he does the very same abuse on Fiji citizens. Bainimarama’s policies are solely based on what he gets out of of them….he has been lining his pockets with bribes from Indon President…but Fiji voters are not stupid like himself. Fiji voters have had enough of Bainimarama…we will NOT VOTE FOR BAINIMARAMA.

Vinaka, JSL, for another brilliant posting.

USP Journalism Academics speak out against the Army’s justification of using torture to silence Fijians and Government harassment of the press said...

Media Release: Sunday, June 22, 14:

University of the South Pacific journalism academics are appalled that one of Fiji’s top journalists was denied accreditation to the Pacific Islands Development Forum and police allegedly harassed another, while the head of Fiji’s military has justified torturing Fijian citizens.
Islands Business editor Samisoni Pareti was denied accreditation to last week’s PIDF without explanation, while Netani Rika, Communications Manager for the Pacific Conference of Churches was allegedly visited by police multiple times at his Nadi Hotel.
Meanwhile, the head of Fiji’s armed forces, Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga, admitted the military has beaten and tortured Fijian citizens who expressed dissent on radio, and even claimed it was the right thing to do.
Tikoitoga told the Age of Melbourne that the victims were speaking on the radio and trying to start “militant groups” and had to be silenced.
Speaking about the experiences of Pareti and Rika, Patrick Craddock, the Acting Journalism Coordinator for the USP Journalism program says:
“This is one more indicator of the way the military government intimidates journalists leading up to the general election. Where was the loud-mouthed MIDA when this is happened? It was silent and still is. The Chairman, Aswhin Raj talks about robust journalism. It is all mouth water talk. What an insult to freedom of speech.”
A lecturer in journalism at USP, Dr. Matthew Thompson, says the new military chief’s endorsement of torture to silence critics is disgusting:
“Do Fijian soldiers beat and torture people they see as troublemakers while on peacekeeping missions or do they reserve that treatment for Fijian citizens?” says Dr. Thompson.
He says that Tikoitoga seems to be sending a strong message to Fijians to shut up and fall in line.
“The military don’t seem to have a clue about democracy. The media have all kinds of absurd restrictions on them but the armed forces can seemingly do what they want. What a sad state of affairs in which to enter an election period,” Dr. Thompson says.
Both lecturers say that the talk about torture and the denial of accreditation to reputable journalists at the PIDF show that the military government has little respect for freedom of expression.

All Hail Bainimarama said...

The military has every right to silence militant groups before they can organise and start trouble.

The people expect and need a strong hand to guide them.

There are situations in which torture is not only necessary but morally mandatory.

Unruly elements need to be dealt with severely if we're ever to have a democracy that's more than jackals voted in by jackasses.

USP VC RAJESH CHANDRA SHITTING BRICKS said...

@USP Journalism Academics speak out, USP's coup supporting VC Rajesh Chandra must be shitting bricks. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, who is the real USP VC, must have called Rajesh Chandra by now with the orders to get rid of of the two journalism academics. Rajesh Chandra, who likes to shout at staff and apply bully tactics, muct have meekly agreed with his boss Aiyaz. Even as we speak, Rajesh Chandra and his deputy Esther William's must be meeting and hatching ways of how to get rid of these two latest 'nuisances'. It won't be long now. There is no room at USP for opposition views. Wait for the fallout.

The Heckler said...

Right. After all, there's no telling WHAT Ben Padarath might have been hiding up his anus!

Come to think of it, All Hail Bainimarama, what are you hiding up YOURS?

Anybody with a rifle handy, preferably doublebarreled?

Bravo @USP Journalism Academics for speaking out against repression. You gave brought some respect to USP. Sycophantic VC Rajesh Chandra and equally corrupt deputy Esther Williams have sold out academic freedom. They ave taken USP to the dogs. We pray the journalism academics do not suffer the same fate as Wadam Narsey and Marc Edge.

Hello Sir
Yes, I do understand. I totally agree that what I say in my vision, mission and strategic plan is all a show to fool all. You very we'll know I have always done as you say. I brought Sudesh, Jay, and promoted Anjela and Robert just to be my puppy and to bully staff. I harassed and threatened Susan, Wadan, Biman and all those who challenged the institute. After all, as you instructed I am ruling it just like you are running the country-a mini regime. I sorry, I didn't keep track of these journalism lecturers. I will straight away ask my assistant and mouthpiece Esther to work on it. I am so sorry if the acts of these smart academics have made you uneasy. I will make sure that we do not get smart academics in future and only those ewho never do anything that we don't want. Please forgive me. In return I would like my wife Dharma to get a ticket for Fiji First. You will never hear of anything from these journalist academics anymore. I will ask Sudesh to begin his bullying tactic straightaway .
