Apart from releasing $9 million dollars in 2007 for Sugar Adaptation Strategy, the EU has held back allocations for 2008 worth over $100 million and the $70 million for 2009. In 2007, the then Head of Delegation of EU for Fiji and the Pacific, Dr Roberto Ridolfi, told a media conference that Fiji risked losing the entire $350 million aid to farmers to another other ACP nation, if elections were not held by March 2009.
The cane farmers have been the biggest losers as a result of the EU decision.
